Allegations of Child Sexual Abuse Cover-Up against Mariano and Clara Rivera

Mariano Rivera, a celebrated figure in baseball history, and his wife, Clara, are facing a lawsuit alleging their complicity in covering up the sexual abuse of a minor girl connected to their church, Refuge of Hope in New Rochelle, New York. The lawsuit, filed in the Supreme Court of Westchester County, paints a disturbing picture of alleged negligence and a prioritized protection of reputation over the well-being of a vulnerable child.

The lawsuit centers around a young girl, identified as "Jane Doe," who was allegedly abused by an older minor girl, "MG." The abuse is said to have begun during a 2018 summer internship at the Ignite Life Center in Gainesville, Florida, a program supported by Refuge of Hope. Clara Rivera had encouraged Jane Doe’s participation in the internship, assuring her mother of its safety. However, concerning phone calls from Jane Doe prompted her mother to contact Clara, who promised an investigation, according to the complaint. The Riveras subsequently traveled to Florida, where the lawsuit asserts they became aware of the alleged abuse but failed to take adequate action.

Instead of intervening to protect Jane Doe, the lawsuit claims the Riveras pressured her into silence, prioritizing the reputation of their church and the internship program. This alleged pressure to remain silent continued even after the return from the summer camp. The complaint details a barbecue held at the Riveras’ former home in Rye, New York, where MG and Jane Doe were left unsupervised despite the prior allegations. The lawsuit suggests that the Riveras, who invited children from the church but not their parents, including Jane Doe’s mother, created an environment that facilitated further potential abuse.

The lawsuit further alleges that the Riveras’ inaction stemmed from a desire to avoid public scrutiny and potential financial repercussions that might arise from allegations of child sexual abuse becoming public. This suggests that the protection of their image and financial interests took precedence over the safety and well-being of the alleged victim. The complaint portrays the Riveras’ response as a calculated attempt to manage the situation internally rather than addressing it through appropriate channels.

Beyond the alleged abuse during the summer program and the subsequent barbecue, the lawsuit also implicates Ruben Tavarez Jr., the son of Refuge of Hope’s Associate Pastor, in abusing the same girl in August 2021. This addition broadens the scope of alleged abuse connected to the church and raises further questions about the overall environment and oversight within the Refuge of Hope community.

Mariano Rivera’s illustrious baseball career, which includes 19 seasons with the New York Yankees, five World Series championships, and a unanimous induction into the Hall of Fame, stands in stark contrast to the gravity of these allegations. His prominent status and the esteem in which he is held make these accusations all the more shocking. This case underscores the importance of holding individuals accountable, regardless of their public image or accomplishments.

As of the filing of this lawsuit, the Riveras have not responded publicly to the allegations and have not identified legal representation. It remains to be seen how they will address these serious accusations and what further developments will emerge as the legal proceedings unfold. This case will undoubtedly bring intense scrutiny to both the Riveras and their church, demanding transparency and accountability in addressing the serious claims of child sexual abuse and its alleged cover-up.
