Kenny Law, Moonshiner and Distiller, Passes Away at 68

Everett "Kenny" Law, a prominent figure on the Discovery Channel docuseries Moonshiners, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2025, at the age of 68. His passing was confirmed by Law’s Choice Distillery, the business he co-owned with his cousin, Henry Law. While the official cause of death has not been publicly released, family sources indicate that Kenny had been battling multiple health issues in recent years, including a heart attack in 2024 and ongoing heart trouble, compounded by diabetes. His death marked the end of a colorful life deeply intertwined with the tradition of moonshining in Appalachia.

Kenny Law was a third-generation distiller from Virginia, carrying on a legacy that stretched back two centuries. He rose to prominence as a cast member of Moonshiners, a reality show that offered viewers a glimpse into the lives and practices of individuals who perpetuate the clandestine craft of distilling untaxed liquor. Kenny joined the show in its eighth season and quickly became a beloved figure, known for his expertise and engaging personality. His presence on the show contributed significantly to its popularity and helped to demystify the often-misunderstood world of moonshining. His passing leaves a void in the Moonshiners community and the broader world of craft distilling.

The news of Kenny’s death reverberated across social media platforms, with tributes pouring in from fans, colleagues, and friends. Amanda Bryant, a fellow Moonshiners cast member, expressed her grief and honored Kenny as a "true legend," emphasizing the honor of knowing him and calling him a friend. The official Moonshiners Facebook page also acknowledged Kenny’s passing, highlighting his valued role within the show’s community and extending condolences to his family. These outpourings of sympathy underscore the impact Kenny had on those who knew him and those who followed his journey on television.

Kenny’s obituary paints a picture of a man deeply rooted in family and tradition. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kenzie and Nathan Wright; two grandsons, Atlas and Fox Wright; his brothers, David Law and Ronnie Law, along with Ronnie’s wife, Suzanne; his cousin, Henry Lee Law, who shared a brotherly bond with him; and numerous aunts, nephews, nieces, and cousins. This extensive family network reflects the close-knit community within which Kenny lived and worked, further emphasizing the personal loss felt by many in the wake of his passing. His legacy will undoubtedly live on through his family and the generations who continue the tradition of distilling.

Beyond his television persona, Kenny Law was a dedicated craftsman and entrepreneur. He co-owned and operated Law’s Choice Distillery with his cousin Henry, a testament to their shared passion for distilling and their commitment to preserving the traditions of their ancestors. The distillery served as a tangible embodiment of Kenny’s expertise and dedication to his craft. While the future of Law’s Choice Distillery remains uncertain, it stands as a memorial to Kenny’s contribution to the world of distilling.

Kenny Law’s life and career encapsulate a unique blend of tradition, entrepreneurship, and entertainment. He bridged the gap between the clandestine world of moonshining and the mainstream media, bringing the often secretive practices of Appalachian distillers to a wider audience. His participation in Moonshiners allowed viewers to connect with the history and culture of the region, while also showcasing the individual personalities and skills involved in the craft. Kenny’s legacy will be remembered not only by his family and friends but also by the countless viewers who admired his skill, his passion, and his genuine portrayal of a life steeped in Appalachian tradition. His passing marks the end of an era, but his story continues to inspire and intrigue those fascinated by the world of moonshining and the individuals who keep its traditions alive.
