Sony Studios and SAG-AFTRA Express Support for Blake Lively Following Justin Baldoni Lawsuit Concerning “It Ends With Us”

The entertainment industry is grappling with serious allegations of sexual harassment and a subsequent smear campaign, with actress Blake Lively at the center of the storm. Lively, known for her roles in “Gossip Girl” and “A Simple Favor,” has accused her “It Ends With Us” co-star and director, Justin Baldoni, of creating a hostile work environment and orchestrating a campaign to damage her reputation. The accusations have sparked strong reactions from industry players, including Sony Pictures, the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), and several individuals associated with the film’s production. Lively’s claims and Baldoni’s denials paint a complex picture of conflict and raise questions about workplace conduct and the power dynamics within Hollywood.

Lively’s complaint, filed on December 20, 2023, details a series of alleged incidents on the set of “It Ends With Us.” She claims Baldoni engaged in inappropriate behavior, including showing nude videos and images of women, discussing sexual conquests, making inquiries about Lively’s weight, and mentioning her deceased father. These actions, according to Lively, contributed to a hostile work environment and caused her severe emotional distress. Furthermore, Lively alleges that Baldoni and his team launched a “social manipulation” campaign to tarnish her reputation, using text messages and other tactics to undermine her image. The complaint paints a picture of a deeply uncomfortable and unprofessional atmosphere on set, where Lively felt harassed and threatened.

Baldoni, through his lawyer, has categorically denied all allegations, calling them “completely false, outrageous, and intentionally salacious.” He claims that Lively’s lawsuit is a strategic move to repair her own reputation and to control the narrative surrounding the film’s production. Baldoni’s lawyer alleges Lively made numerous demands and threats, including threatening not to appear on set or promote the film unless her demands were met. This countersuit suggests a different dynamic, portraying Lively as difficult and demanding, and the lawsuit as a retaliatory act.

The alleged smear campaign is a particularly contentious point of contention. Lively’s complaint includes text messages from Baldoni and his team, which she claims are evidence of the orchestrated effort to damage her reputation. Baldoni’s lawyer, however, argues that these messages have been taken out of context and that the public relations firm hired by Baldoni was simply performing standard crisis management in response to threats from Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds. He further asserts that Lively’s own actions and interviews during the film’s promotional tour were perceived negatively by audiences, and that any negative publicity she received was a direct result of her own behavior, not a manufactured smear campaign. This conflicting narrative further muddies the waters and presents two vastly different interpretations of the events.

Several key players in the entertainment industry have voiced their support for Lively. Sony Pictures, the studio behind “It Ends With Us,” issued a strong statement condemning any reputational attacks against Lively and reiterating their support for her. SAG-AFTRA also released a statement applauding Lively’s courage in speaking out and emphasizing the importance of a safe working environment free from harassment, discrimination, and retaliation. These statements from powerful industry bodies lend significant weight to Lively’s claims and highlight the growing concern about workplace misconduct in Hollywood.

Beyond institutional support, several individuals associated with the film have also publicly backed Lively. Colleen Hoover, the author of the book on which the film is based, praised Lively for her honesty, kindness, and patience. Brandon Sklenar, another co-star in the film, shared an article about the allegations and expressed his support for Lively. These expressions of support from colleagues who worked alongside Lively and Baldoni add a personal dimension to the unfolding story and suggest that Lively’s claims resonate within the film’s production team.

In contrast, Baldoni has faced significant professional repercussions following the allegations. He was dropped by his talent agency, WME, and his podcast co-host, Liz Plank, announced her departure from their joint project. Additionally, the women’s non-profit organization Vital Voices rescinded an award they had recently presented to Baldoni. These actions demonstrate the serious nature of the allegations and the potential consequences for individuals accused of misconduct, even before any official investigation or legal ruling. The situation remains fluid, and the truth of the accusations and counter-accusations remains to be determined. However, the unfolding events have already sparked important conversations about workplace safety, accountability, and the power dynamics within the entertainment industry.
