Factors Contributing to Difficulty in Maintaining New Year’s Resolutions

The beginning of a new year often sparks a desire for self-improvement, leading many to set resolutions and strive for personal growth. However, the cosmos can sometimes throw a wrench in our best-laid plans. According to astrologer Babs Cheung, also known as The Astro Translator, the sluggish start to 2025 and the difficulty many are experiencing in maintaining their New Year’s resolutions can be attributed to Mars being in retrograde. Mars, the planet associated with energy, action, and willpower, is currently hindering our ability to initiate change and pursue our goals effectively. This retrograde period, which occurs every two years for approximately two to three months, can leave individuals feeling unmotivated, insecure, and impatient.

Mars entered its retrograde phase in Leo on December 6, 2024, and transitioned into Cancer on January 6, 2025. This transit through Cancer, a sign representing home, family, and security, further intensifies our inward focus, making it more challenging to project ourselves outwards and pursue ambitious goals. Cheung explains that Mars retrograde in Cancer encourages introspection and a focus on nurturing relationships and creating a sense of comfort and security. This period prompts us to prioritize our well-being and connect with our loved ones, including our pets. It’s a time for re-evaluating our priorities and seeking solace in our inner circles rather than striving for external validation or accomplishments.

While Mars retrograde can be frustrating for those eager to implement their New Year’s resolutions, Cheung advises embracing this period of relative inactivity. She encourages individuals to use this time to recharge after the holidays, prioritize their peace and health, and prepare for the year ahead. Instead of forcing action, which might be met with resistance and delays, Cheung suggests postponing goal-setting rituals until Mars stations direct on February 23, 2025. This delay allows for a more grounded and effective approach to self-improvement once the planetary energy shifts.

To gain clarity on areas needing improvement, Cheung recommends reflecting on the last time Mars was in Cancer, which was in May 2023. Looking back at social media posts, calendar entries, or photos from that period can provide insights into the mindset and goals that were prevalent then. This reflection can serve as a source of inspiration and motivation for the current period of self-improvement. By understanding past patterns and aspirations, individuals can better define their present goals and approach them with renewed focus.

While the period of Mars retrograde may feel stagnant, it offers a valuable opportunity for introspection and preparation. Cheung advises against initiating any new endeavors until the final week of February, when Mars goes direct. This period of relative inactivity allows for deeper reflection, rest, and the cultivation of inner resources. By resisting the urge to force action and instead focusing on self-care and introspection, individuals can emerge from this period with renewed clarity and energy to pursue their goals effectively. Avoiding impulsive actions and resisting the urge to lash out during this time is crucial for maintaining emotional equilibrium.

For those seeking an even more auspicious time to launch new ventures, Cheung recommends waiting until the spring equinox on March 20, the astrological new year. This period, coinciding with the beginning of Aries season, marks a time of renewed energy and forward momentum. Initiating significant changes during this time, when the astrological and elemental energies are aligned with growth and action, can lead to more favorable outcomes. Embracing this natural rhythm allows individuals to harness the potent energy of the spring equinox to propel their goals forward with greater force and effectiveness. By aligning our actions with the cosmic cycles, we can maximize our potential for success and personal growth. In essence, using the period of Mars retrograde for reflection and preparation sets the stage for more impactful action when the time is right.
