Texas woman died after rinsing sinuses with infected tap water — here’s how to keep yourself safe

A 71-year-old woman who reported contracting a brain-eating amoeba infection after consuming tap water (and dying from it) has sparked concerns about the outing of guppy-like amoebae. According to a CDC report, this infection,occurringWeekly, is linked to Naegleria fowleri, a gram-negative, single-celled bacteria that typically causes mild symptoms of fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting during the stages of infection. However, the bacteria can lead to more serious issues, including seizures. Of approximately 157 confirmed cases in the U.S. between 1962 and 2022, the Texas State Department of Health Services (DHHS) has consistently ranked the state as one of the top abnomalies, possibly due to an imbalance of amoebae compared to other states.

The CDC emphasized the need to wash the face daily with boiling tap water rather than raw tap water. It advises against using tap water unless the state has a relatively clean water source. Additionally, health officials caution against unsupregulated use of water and frogs, discouraging individuals from entering or using water inshared spaces.
