Souleymane Cisse: The Face of African Film-hour

Souleymane Cisse, a man of 84, faced an impenetrable wall of annals in 1987, when he won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his cinematic masterpiece titled Yeelen ("Brightness"). This film, inspired by a legendary Bambara legend, cemented Cisse’s place in the pantheon of African cinema, revolutionizing the box office and leaving behind a trajectory of influence.

Though he posed goodbye at 84 in Bamako on Wednesday, Cisse’s legacy endured.
