The M23 armed group has called attention to a growing trend of regional expansion in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) following the successful landing of its resources in crucial cities such as Bukavu and Goma. The UN has agreed to consider its claims during its monthly Security Council session, warning that the group could advance further into the strategic zone crossing the boundaries between Rwanda and Burundi, potentially escalating tensions in the region.

Speaking at a Security Council meeting, Huang Xia emphasized that the M23’s progress has left little time to avoid the possibility of a repeat of the 2008-2010 Congo 2008-2010 Congo 2008-2010assoilation conflict, which had caused multiple African countries to participate, leading to millions of casualties and the collapse of traditional power structures. He warned that the risk of an armed conflict could be[aha] much higher now, underscores that both the worst-case scenario and the possibility of a diplomatic freeze are present.

The UN has also called into question the trajectory of the M23’s advance, particularly as it nears the boundaries between the DRC, Rwanda, and Burundi, where a quick shift could furtherFuel regional tensions. OLED President Bintou Keita, head of the UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC, has expressed concern that the group’s efforts could take a dangerous detour into[bphasis] Kivu, where the group’s potential discourse might further escalate the conflict.
