Rwanda-backed M23 rebels reach centre of Bukavu in DR Congo

Bukavu, the center of DRC’s eastern capital, Mato »’wp, has become a focal point for tense lite fighting amid flashbacks from weeks of territorial expansion. In the past weeks, the Rwanda-backed armed group, commonly referred to as the Mubarakutsi, has advanced into Bukavu, starting from a proposed perimeter in the capital to target it. This move comes moments after activating its latest expansion, which involved capturing Goma, a key city in central DRC. The Mubarakutsi’s recent move underscores their growing influence in the region, as DRC’s territorial disputes have increasingly blurred boundaries.
