Japan and the Philippines Enhance Defense Cooperation to Counter China’s Actions in the Region
On Monday, February 24, Japan’s Defense Minister Gen Nakatani emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration between Japan and the Philippines to counter China’s increasing geopolitical tensions in the region and beyond. Nakatani’s comments came ahead of a bilateral meeting in Manila, highlighting the need for Japan and the Philippines to adapt their defense strategies to address mutual concerns over China’s rise in military dominance, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.

Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro shared his insights at the meeting, emphasizing that a rules-based international order is crucial for ensuring resources are used equitably to protect against "unilateral attempts by China and other countries to change the international order." Teodoro stressed the importance of fostering a resilient partnership that focuses on collective security rather than individual rivalries, with the goal of maintaining stability and integrity in the region.
