High-Achieving Victorian Students Recognized in 2024 VCE Results

The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) results for 2024 have been released, revealing a cohort of exceptional students who navigated the lingering effects of the pandemic to achieve remarkable academic success. Over 47,400 students received their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), with the top echelon of achievers showcasing outstanding dedication and a diverse range of interests. Among the standout performers was Deniz Daymen of St Albans Secondary College, who achieved a perfect study score of 50 in economics, placing him among an elite group of 688 VCE students to achieve the highest possible score in a subject. Haileybury student Jaeden Vaithianathan achieved the coveted 99.95 ATAR, showcasing the rewards of a well-rounded approach to education. While considering prestigious fields like medicine, engineering, and classical studies, Vaithianathan attributed his success to balancing academic rigor with extracurricular pursuits, including debating, playing the violin, and participating in school theatre productions. His classmate, Lucy Gibson, achieving a 99.65 ATAR, further cemented Haileybury’s reputation for academic excellence. Gibson’s decision to pursue a double degree in law and languages at the Australian National University highlighted the diverse academic paths available to high-achieving students.

Camberwell Grammar student Joel Cheok also attained a perfect 99.95 ATAR, a testament to his exceptional aptitude and the school’s nurturing environment. Cheok’s achievement, bolstered by five perfect study scores of 50 across multiple years, distinguished him as a truly exceptional student. His participation in the International Biology Olympiad, where he ranked 43rd globally, further demonstrated his commitment to academic pursuits and his ability to excel on the world stage. Cheok’s success story resonated with Camberwell Grammar’s motto, “by our deeds may we be known,” showcasing how the school’s ethos translates into real-world achievement. The school’s headmaster acknowledged the resilience of the 2024 cohort, highlighting the challenges they overcame due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This recognition emphasized the extraordinary efforts of both students and educators in navigating unprecedented circumstances to achieve outstanding results.
