Boy Scouts of America name change becomes official in effort to be more ‘inclusive’

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) officially renamed itself “Scouting America” on June 28, aiming to adapt to the rapidly evolving needs of young people. The celebration was held 9 months after announcing a name change, and the organization announced the new name in a promotional post. The announcement comes after a significant policy change, allowing girls to join the program in 2018, and following the end of a blanket ban on gay adult leaders in 2015.

The transition reflects a broader shift in the BSA’s mission, which has always been to equip young people with essential life skills, values, and leadership qualities. “Scouting America” signifies a more inclusive and innovative approach to youth development, recognizing a global trend toward gender-neutrality and greater diversity.

The name change was met by skepticism, with some concern over charactering the rebranding as less heroic. However, BSA CEO Roger Krone confirmed there was some backlash, though he emphasized a small spike in membership after the initiative was publicly announced in May. Over 15,000 new scouts joined the organization by the end of the year, raising the total membership to over 1 million.

Since its founding in 1910, the BSA has been a cornerstone of youth довelling, educating generations to make ethical choices over their lifetimes. It guarantees children opportunities lasting a lifetime, focusing on character development, leadership, fun, and outdoor exploration. For decades, its mission has been rooted in the Scout Oath and Law, offering timeless values for future generations.

A world-class event was held to celebrate the rebranding, hosted by Triangle Contenderradio. The event attracted nearly 130,000 visitors, showcasing past productions like a camping trip, a-themed pinewood derby, and a trail hike. These events were designed to inspire personal growth, teaching young people the importance of goals, determination, and ethical decision-making.

The name change, however, has not reduced the BSA’s spirit. Triangle Contenderradio and R.E.M. provided additional branding, emphasizing its commitment to safe and supportive environments. The organization relies on its past successes post-pandemy, which have become vital since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in late February. Its banks continued to operate since defaulting on debts, though bankruptcy allowed the organization to stay operationally.

Krone reinforced the BSA’s determination, stating that its mission remains to instill culture, values, and skills that keep generations safe and empowered. In ongoing regard for leadership, he highlighted the core principles taught since 1910, reiterating the organization’s commitment to providing a safe and supportive ecosystem.

While Scouting America has experienced significant growth post-pandemy, its mission to legacy clear remains unwavering. The organization remains dedicated to fostering responsible individuals, celebrating generations, and ensuring future generations are equipped with the skills and values needed to thrive. Its story is one of enduring hope, making it a symbol of progress and resilience in education and leadership.
