A 169-Day Circumcontinental Journey Ignites Arctic Passion for B.C. Resident

Ken Burton, a man driven by the mantra “trust the journey,” has lived a life less ordinary, marked by a diverse range of experiences and a deep connection to the Arctic. His adventurous spirit has led him across the globe, accumulating stories and achievements that reflect his unwavering curiosity and commitment to exploration. From navigating unforgiving Arctic waters to leading expeditions and supporting communities, Burton’s life is a testament to embracing opportunities and giving back along the way.

The Arctic, a region of stark beauty and challenging conditions, has always beckoned Burton. In 2000, he captained the St. Roch II, retracing the historic voyage of the first ship to circumnavigate North America. While the original St. Roch’s journey, fraught with the perils of Arctic ice, took over two years, Burton’s expedition, though still demanding, was completed in a considerably shorter 169 days. This voyage, encompassing fifty ports of call across seven countries, allowed Burton to share the story of the St. Roch with a global audience of approximately 17 million people, highlighting the ship’s remarkable feat and the enduring spirit of exploration.

Burton’s fascination with Arctic history extends beyond the St. Roch. He also participated in the search for the lost Franklin expedition ships, a quest that consumed explorers and researchers for decades. Using sonar technology, Burton and his associate came tantalizingly close to discovering the Erebus, a mere 60 nautical miles away—a distance that feels significantly smaller in the vast expanse of the Arctic. Though they didn’t locate the wreck at the time, their efforts underscore the dedication and perseverance required in such challenging environments, and they paved the way for the eventual discovery of the Erebus 14 years later.

Burton’s multifaceted career has encompassed roles as a captain, diver, photographer, and expedition leader. These diverse experiences have allowed him to develop a deep understanding of the world’s oceans, from their icy poles to their tropical depths. He approaches his work not just as an explorer, but as a steward of the environment and a contributor to the communities he encounters. His commitment to giving back is evident in his approach to visiting Arctic communities, where he ensures his presence brings tangible benefits, whether in the form of financial support or donations.

Beyond his explorations, Burton served as the executive director of the Vancouver Maritime Museum, the final resting place of the original St. Roch, further solidifying his connection to maritime history and preservation. His involvement extends to non-profit organizations like the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue and several other societies, demonstrating his commitment to maritime safety and community engagement. Burton’s diverse experiences showcase his adaptability and willingness to contribute to causes he believes in.

Burton’s life story is a powerful illustration of embracing the unexpected and finding fulfillment in a life less ordinary. His willingness to “step through the door” of opportunity has led him on a remarkable journey, marked by both personal achievement and contributions to society. He emphasizes the importance of trusting the path life presents, even when it veers off the expected course. His experiences serve as an inspiration to those who seek adventure, purpose, and a deep connection to the world around them. He embodies the spirit of exploration and the importance of giving back to the communities and environments that have shaped his journey.

Through his diverse experiences, Burton has not only fulfilled his own aspirations but has also inspired others to embrace the unknown and contribute to the world around them. His life serves as a reminder that the most rewarding journeys are often those that are unexpected and that by trusting the process, we can discover hidden talents, forge meaningful connections, and leave a lasting positive impact. Burton’s commitment to exploration, community engagement, and environmental stewardship offers a valuable lesson in how to live a life of purpose and adventure. He demonstrates that it’s not just about ticking off items on a bucket list, but about embracing the journey itself, with all its challenges and rewards. His story encourages us to be open to new experiences, to give back to the communities we encounter, and to trust that the path, however unpredictable, will lead to a richer and more fulfilling life.
