The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) orchestrated its yearly school safety patrol skating party at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena, providing an afternoon of fun and recognition for over 300 student volunteers from Lethbridge and surrounding areas. These grade five and six patrollers, who dedicate their time to ensuring the safety of their peers in school zones, enjoyed the opportunity to skate alongside members of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, a cherished local hockey team. The event fostered a sense of community and appreciation for the patrollers’ diligent service, allowing them to interact with their hockey heroes, collect autographs, and capture memorable photos. The skating party stands as a testament to the AMA’s commitment to acknowledging and rewarding the contributions of these young safety ambassadors.

The AMA School Safety Patrol program, a cornerstone of school zone safety across the region, relies on the dedication of these student volunteers. They play a crucial role in facilitating safe passage for students at crosswalks, guiding their peers across busy intersections and reminding them of traffic safety protocols. The patrollers’ presence provides an added layer of security and vigilance, helping to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of students as they travel to and from school. The annual skating party serves as a tangible expression of gratitude for their unwavering commitment to this vital service. By celebrating their contributions, the AMA fosters a culture of appreciation for their efforts and encourages their continued involvement in the program.

Allison Purcell, a representative of the AMA School Safety Patrol, emphasized the significance of the annual appreciation event, highlighting its long-standing history and its importance in recognizing the patrollers’ contributions. The partnership with the Lethbridge Hurricanes adds an element of excitement and prestige to the event, allowing the patrollers to interact with local role models and experience the thrill of skating with professional athletes. The presence of the Hurricanes underscores the value placed on the patrollers’ work and reinforces the message that their dedication is appreciated by the broader community. This recognition serves as a powerful motivator for the patrollers, encouraging them to continue their valuable service in keeping school zones safe.

The annual skating party serves as a platform to not only celebrate the existing patrollers but also to inspire future generations to join the ranks of the AMA School Safety Patrol. By showcasing the fun and rewarding aspects of the program, the event encourages younger students to consider volunteering their time and contributing to the safety of their school community. The positive experience shared by the patrollers at the skating party acts as a powerful recruitment tool, demonstrating the value and recognition associated with this important role. This ongoing recruitment ensures the sustainability of the program and its continued positive impact on school zone safety.

The AMA’s dedication to school safety extends beyond the annual skating party, encompassing a range of initiatives and resources designed to promote safe practices and raise awareness among students, parents, and drivers. These efforts include educational programs, safety campaigns, and collaborative partnerships with schools and community organizations. By working together, the AMA and its partners strive to create a safer environment for students traveling to and from school, reducing the risk of accidents and promoting a culture of safety within the community. The annual skating party stands as one component of a comprehensive approach to school safety, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and community involvement.

The partnership between the AMA and the Lethbridge Hurricanes exemplifies the positive impact that community collaborations can have on youth programs. By aligning with a prominent local organization like the Hurricanes, the AMA amplifies the message of school safety and reaches a wider audience. The involvement of the Hurricanes adds a unique dimension to the skating party, creating a memorable experience for the patrollers and reinforcing the importance of their contributions. This collaboration serves as a model for other organizations seeking to enhance their youth programs and engage with the community in meaningful ways. The combined efforts of the AMA and the Hurricanes create a powerful platform for promoting school safety and inspiring young people to make a positive difference in their community.
