BC Conservative Party calls for IH CEO to resign immediately amid doctor shortage

This article discusses the position of Kelowna MLA Gavin Dew, who is calling for the immediate resignation of Interior Health CEO Susan Brown, claiming that the region’s healthcare system is undergoing a crisis. Dew’s arguments are rooted in THE cartridge’s growing crisis within the health system, including a temporary closure of Kelowna General Hospital’s pediatric unit due to a doctor shortage. He described this situation as indicative of a larger systemic issue, emphasizing that it is not feasible to close an organization solely because it is about to pass its exit date.

Dew’s letter outlines his call for action, following media reports that Brown is set to retire in six months. He argues that the healthcare system cannot afford more time for review, as the system is focused on retaining staff rather than expanding services through permanent changes. He highlights that the Ministry of Health and Interior Health are prioritizing hiring and staffing rather than retaining employees, calling this a dangerous decision that could hinder the organization’s trajectory.

In a formal letter sent to the Health Minister Josie Osborne, Dew requests that Osborne intervene if Brown does not resign voluntarily. He also calls for an interim CEO to be appointed to lead the organization until a permanent replacement is identified. Osborne, however, defends the leadership team, expressing understanding of Brown’s support for exiting the position and appreciating Osborne’s efforts to support the current system. She emphasizes the need for immediate change, particularly given the strained healthcare system and the importance of addressing theroot cause of the crisis before further delay.

The article concludes by noting thatFew policy changes are sudden, and implementing meaningful reforms would require unprecedented investment and planning. Osborne praises Dew’s commitment to support the dialogue and processes in place to rebuild the system, while also highlighting the importance of collaboration and innovation to overcome this crisis going forward.
