For over 130 years, the Fulford residence, located in downtown Montreal, has served as a sanctuary for vulnerable women, providing them with essential support and community. Acquired by Chez Doris in May, this historic building, constructed in 1854, is set to play a pivotal role in the organization’s future endeavors. Chez Doris plans to transform the Fulford residence into a comprehensive service center, featuring a day center, healthcare suite, large communal room, and 20 transitional housing bedrooms. Elise Monaghan Joubert, the director of philanthropy at Chez Doris, emphasizes that consolidating all services under one roof will help ensure that women do not fall through the cracks by having to navigate multiple buildings for support.

Renovations are a crucial step before the new facility can open its doors to clients. The Fulford residence requires extensive updates, including overhauls of its electrical, plumbing, and ventilation systems, as well as the installation of a new elevator. Moreover, an extension at the back of the building is planned to enhance the facility’s capacity to accommodate the women in need. While the organization has successfully secured the majority of the funds required for this project, an additional $8 million is needed to complete the renovations and bring the vision of the new shelter to fruition.

Chez Doris is on a timeline to raise these funds within the next several months, with a goal to commence renovations by June and to officially welcome clients by 2027. This ambitious timeline reflects the urgent need for sufficient support services for vulnerable women in Montreal, fostering a sense of hope and relief in the community that has long been associated with the Fulford residence. In today’s climate, where economic hardships and various social issues disproportionately affect women, the opening of Chez Doris’ new shelter is both timely and critical.

The mission of Chez Doris is deeply rooted in the principle of women supporting women, a sentiment echoed by the organization’s executive director, Diane Pilote. She highlights the significance of the new facility as a tangible representation of their daily commitment to uplifting women in need. By creating a space where individuals can find solace, healthcare, and community support, Chez Doris aims to empower women and encourage their resilience on the path toward recovery and self-sufficiency.

The Fulford residence’s transformation into a modern shelter is not just about providing accommodation; it’s about creating a nurturing environment where vulnerable women can access holistic services. This integrated approach addresses various aspects of their well-being, ranging from basic needs like shelter to health care and community engagement. The vision for the facility is focused on fostering dignity, respect, and empowerment, ensuring that the women who utilize these services can rebuild their lives and pave new paths forward.

As Chez Doris embarks on this exciting project, the community looks on with anticipation, recognizing the vital impact such an initiative will have on the lives of many women. The Fulford residence has long been a symbol of hope and healing, and with the ongoing dedication of Chez Doris, it will continue to provide a much-needed refuge for vulnerable women for generations to come. The organization’s commitment to consolidating services and providing a comprehensive support system reflects a broader understanding of the challenges faced by women today, positioning Chez Doris as a critical player in the ongoing fight for gender equity and community support.
