Pam Turgeon, a Kelowna resident, has transformed her profound grief into a driving force for positive change. Having tragically lost both her son, Ryan, and son-in-law, Cody, to the unrelenting grip of the toxic drug crisis, Turgeon has channeled her pain into a determined effort to prevent other families from experiencing similar devastation. For the past five years, she has spearheaded the annual “Parade With A Purpose,” a Christmas parade dedicated to raising funds for a much-needed youth treatment and recovery centre in Kelowna. This year marks a significant milestone for the parade as it moves to the downtown core, amplifying its visibility and fundraising potential. Turgeon’s unwavering commitment has already garnered hundreds of thousands of dollars, and with a fundraising goal of $250,000 this year, she is poised to receive a matching donation from an anonymous benefactor, further propelling the project forward.

The beneficiary of these fundraising efforts is Bridge Youth and Family Services, a local organization leading the charge to establish the youth treatment and recovery facility. The urgency of this project is underscored by the pervasive impact of the toxic drug crisis on the community, evident in the alarming rates of overdoses and the struggles faced by individuals battling substance use. Kelly Paley, Director of Community Engagement for Bridge Youth and Family Services, emphasizes the critical need for accessible treatment and recovery options for young people. This sentiment resonates deeply within the community, as the devastating consequences of the drug crisis continue to unfold.

While the BC Coroners Service recently reported a slight decline in illicit drug overdose deaths, the fight is far from over. The statistics, though offering a glimmer of hope, underscore the continued importance of early intervention and access to treatment. The proposed youth treatment centre is envisioned as a vital resource in combating the crisis, offering comprehensive support and care to young people struggling with addiction. The approximately $8 million project is steadily nearing its fundraising target, buoyed by the commitment of a donor prepared to undertake the construction of the facility. Land for the centre has already been secured in the Glenmore area, with conceptual designs providing a tangible glimpse into its future.

The planned treatment centre, designed to accommodate up to 40 youth, will offer a residential program encompassing three cottages nestled on the site. This comprehensive approach will provide young residents with access to critical services, including counselling and medical treatment, all within a supportive and nurturing environment. The anticipated groundbreaking is scheduled for spring 2024, with the centre poised to become operational in 2026, marking a significant stride in addressing the urgent need for youth-focused addiction services.

Turgeon’s personal loss fuels her dedication to this project, ensuring that its realization remains a top priority. The memory of her son and son-in-law serves as a constant reminder of the devastating impact of addiction and the urgent need for effective interventions. This year’s Christmas parade, set to begin at the Sails and proceed along Bernard Avenue, takes on even greater significance as it represents a tangible step towards bringing the treatment centre to fruition. Donations are welcomed online and during the parade itself, with volunteers equipped with payment machines facilitating contributions.

The “Parade With A Purpose” stands as a testament to the power of transforming grief into action. Pam Turgeon’s unwavering commitment, coupled with the community’s support, is bringing a vital resource to life, offering hope and healing to young people struggling with addiction. The planned treatment centre, envisioned as a beacon of support and recovery, promises to make a profound difference in the lives of countless youth and their families, ensuring that fewer individuals face the devastating consequences of the toxic drug crisis. The annual Christmas parade, imbued with purpose and driven by compassion, serves as a powerful symbol of community resilience and the unwavering pursuit of a healthier future for all.
