Paul Goyetche, affectionately known as 2MoPaul, has become a cornerstone of the anglophone community in Deux-Montagnes, Quebec, through his self-funded, independent online publication, 2MoPaul.com. For over two decades, Goyetche has diligently chronicled local events, news, and even personal musings, transforming his humble online journal into an essential source of information for English speakers in a region where such resources are becoming increasingly scarce. The website, with its nostalgic early-internet aesthetic, stands as a testament to Goyetche’s enduring commitment to his community, serving as a digital town square for the approximately 20,000 residents of the suburban city northwest of Montreal.

The importance of 2MoPaul.com has been amplified by the Quebec government’s increasing emphasis on the French language, culminating in Bill 96, which restricts the use of English in official communications. This legislation has effectively silenced the city’s official website for English speakers, as Deux-Montagnes doesn’t hold official bilingual status. Consequently, residents like Albert Allen rely heavily on 2MoPaul.com to stay informed about local developments and navigate the intricacies of municipal affairs. With the demise of the local English newspaper, The Victory, decades ago, Goyetche’s platform has become virtually indispensable for the anglophone community.

Goyetche, a retired IT professional, dedicates up to 20 hours a week to this unpaid endeavor, covering a wide range of topics from local sports events, in which he often participates, to the progress of major infrastructure projects like the REM, Montreal’s new light rail network. His coverage extends beyond mere reporting, encompassing community events, fundraisers, and even poignant obituaries, which he crafts with heartfelt dedication. His commitment is so profound that he even brings his laptop on vacation to ensure uninterrupted service to his community. This unwavering dedication has earned him widespread appreciation and recognition within Deux-Montagnes.

The reach of 2MoPaul.com extends beyond the current residents of Deux-Montagnes. People who have long since moved away still connect to their hometown through Goyetche’s updates and nostalgic content. His videos documenting local parades and events have garnered unexpected international attention, with one video of the 2016 Santa Claus Parade inexplicably reaching four million views on YouTube, attracting viewers from as far afield as Brazil and India. This unexpected global reach, while baffling to Goyetche, underscores the universal appeal of community-focused content and the unique connection it fosters.

Goyetche’s dedication to his community goes beyond simply reporting events. He invests personal time and effort into creating touching obituaries, providing a valuable service to bereaved families free of charge. He pours his heart into these tributes, recognizing their importance in honoring the deceased and providing solace to the living. His commitment has even led some community members to request pre-emptive tribute videos, highlighting the deep trust and respect he has cultivated. This dedication to honoring life’s milestones, both joyous and sorrowful, further cements his role as a pillar of the community.

2MoPaul’s impact on Deux-Montagnes is undeniable. He has become a local celebrity, recognized and thanked by residents for his tireless work. His wife, Myrna, shares in his local fame, often stopped at the grocery store by appreciative readers. Despite the recognition and praise, Goyetche remains humble, driven by a genuine love for his community. For him, it’s not about being a star but about serving the people who rely on him, offering a vital link to local information and a sense of belonging in an increasingly francophone environment. His story highlights the power of individual initiative in filling community needs and fostering connection in a rapidly changing world.
