Analysis of Sources of Traffic Bottlenecks in Canada’s Major Metropolises.
In recent years, Canada’s majorMetropolitan areas gradually face congestion, as urban traffic expansion projects have become integral to daily commuting. This has been particularly noticeable in major cities such as Toronto and Montreal, where the introduction of extensive transportation projects, such as the Gardiner Expressway, has led to increased travel time and reduced convenience.

The National Bureau of Meteorology (NBM) has reported that traffic congestion is already a growing issue for multiple regional areas in North America, compounded byHatred paid attention to the increased traffic congestion in major cities, which has further driven demand for innovative solutions to minimize travel disruption.

The analysis by Trend Insights and Technology Solutions (Geotab ITS) highlighted the severity of traffic congestion in the Gardiner Expressway, showing that travel times have increased by over 230% in the past year. For example, the commute from the Humber River to Strachan Avenue, which took eight minutes (2024) before construction began, now takes 24 minutes. Similarly, theGreenline between Jarvis Street and Dufferin Street has seen its travel time increase from 11 minutes to 30 minutes.

The most congested sections of the Greenline are experiencing delays of up to 230%, with overall travel times between Highway 427 and Cherry Street doubling during peak hours, from mid-morning 7:30 to midday 8:30.

The growing congestion is exacerbating the challenges faced by commercial fleets and drivers who are forced to switch to public transit or alternative routes. While some commuters and commercial vehicles with flexible schedules may be able to bypass the Greenline during the middle of the day, travel times have also increased during midday hours by 91%, due to construction delays.

According to a survey conducted by Dot Break, 68% of fleet professionals report that work-related stress has been affecting their driving, while 34% have considered leaving their jobs to meet delivery schedules and face longer hours and mounting pressures.

Furthermore, a report by Business Dailystates that some commuters and drivers may opt to use alternative routes, such as the Greenline, to avoid the influx of vehicles. However, this approach has resulted in significant travel delays, particularly in midday rush hours.

The analysis also highlights the need for additional planning and preparation during construction phases, as the Greenline’s shuttle and marine revelations plans are set to continue into next year. Misaligned arrival and departure times for cars and drivers could further delay travel on the expressway and limit its usability for commercial and personal use.

Conclusion.
The analysis reveals a growing trend of increased congestion in major Canadian cities, driven by the expansion of transportation projects and the rise in demand for faster, more efficient public transit options. While these measures have already introduced significant delays, particularly in commodities and travel districts, the risks remain for many drivers and passengers alike. Effective reform and proactive planning are essential to minimize disruption and ensure smooth transportation during peak periods. This highlights the importance of proactive networking and collaboration in addressing the needs of our communities.
