Anthony Aquaro, a humble hero who dedicated his life to serving others, passed away at the age of 103, just shy of his 104th birthday. His life was a testament to courage, resilience, and unwavering dedication, marked by both wartime service and a distinguished career as a New York City firefighter. From battling German U-boats in the North Atlantic during World War II to confronting the harrowing aftermath of the 1960 mid-air collision over New York City, Aquaro faced extraordinary challenges with stoicism and grace. His legacy is not just one of bravery, but also of profound humility and kindness, traits that resonated throughout his personal and professional life.

Aquaro’s son, Anthony Aquaro Jr., remembers his father’s deep-seated love for the fire department, describing it as his second family. This devotion was evident in Aquaro Sr.’s response to the tragic 1960 mid-air collision, one of the deadliest aviation disasters in history. He worked tirelessly for three days, amidst the wreckage and unimaginable loss, recovering bodies and providing a semblance of order in the face of chaos. This experience, though profoundly affecting, exemplified Aquaro’s commitment to his duty and his unwavering resolve in the face of adversity. It showcased the sacrifices firefighters make, witnessing scenes that would forever impact them, yet continuing to serve their community without hesitation.

Before his nearly three decades of service with the FDNY’s Engine Company 269 in Park Slope, Aquaro served his country in the US Navy during World War II. As a boatswain’s mate third-class stationed in the North Atlantic, he played a crucial role in the dangerous task of hunting and sinking German U-boats. These wartime experiences, shared with his son through stories and reflections, shaped Aquaro’s character and instilled in him the values of courage and resilience that defined his later life. The bond forged through these shared moments of wartime history further solidified the deep connection between father and son.

Despite witnessing tragedy and participating in perilous missions, Aquaro remained remarkably humble. He never sought the spotlight, preferring to quietly go about his work, earning the respect and affection of his colleagues and community. His kindness and calm demeanor were hallmarks of his personality, leaving a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him. This humility, coupled with his unwavering dedication to duty, exemplified the true spirit of a public servant who prioritized the well-being of others above personal recognition.

The FDNY recognized Aquaro’s exceptional service and celebrated his life with heartfelt tributes, including a grand 100th birthday party and subsequent celebrations in the following years. This recognition not only honored his individual contributions, but also served as a testament to the strong bonds of camaraderie and mutual respect within the firefighting community. For Aquaro, these celebrations were a poignant reminder of the enduring friendships he forged during his long and distinguished career, connections that remained strong until he was the last of his cohort.

Anthony Aquaro leaves behind a legacy of service, courage, and humility. He is survived by his wife of 81 years, Gloria, a testament to their enduring love and partnership. He also leaves behind two children, four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, a family who will continue to cherish his memory and the values he instilled in them. His son, Anthony Jr., recalls his father’s constant presence and guidance throughout his life, emphasizing the profound influence he had on shaping his character. Even at 72, Anthony Jr. still sought his father’s advice, a testament to the wisdom and unwavering support he provided. Anthony Aquaro’s life, though marked by both triumph and tragedy, serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the importance of kindness, dedication, and humility in a world often consumed by self-interest. He was a true hero, not only in his actions but in the quiet dignity and unwavering compassion he displayed throughout his long and remarkable life.
