Cubs and Reds Express Interest in Red Sox’s Projected $130 Million Garrett Crochet

The Boston Red Sox have identified a pressing need for starting pitching, with a particular emphasis on left-handed options. With Blake Snell’s recent acquisition by the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Red Sox are now focusing their attention on two main candidates: free agent Max Fried and Chicago White Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet, who is available via trade. The ideal scenario for the Red Sox would be to secure both pitchers to strengthen their rotation significantly. However, given the competitive landscape of MLB in the offseason, acquiring just one of these southpaws could still provide a considerable boost to their starting lineup, especially if they continue to bolster their pitching staff with additional support.

Notably, Garrett Crochet, who has made a notable transition from being primarily a reliever to a starting pitcher, has caught the interest of several teams, including the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds. Reports by Mike Chiari of Bleacher Report suggest that both teams are actively pursuing a trade for Crochet. The 25-year-old lefty had a breakout season in 2024, establishing himself as a bright spot for a struggling White Sox team that recorded an abysmally poor 41-121 record. This resurgence as a starter has amplified his value on the trade market, making him an attractive option for clubs looking to enhance their rotations.

The Chicago Cubs have a relatively solid starting rotation but face challenges with some of their higher-paid pitchers. By trading for Crochet, the Cubs could potentially reposition their roster, possibly dealing away more expensive pitchers like Jameson Taillon. This strategy could not only improve the quality of their pitching depth but also offer financial flexibility to address other roster needs. Given the competitive environment of the National League, the Cubs are keen on making strategic moves to enhance their playoff aspirations.

Conversely, the Cincinnati Reds have already taken steps to improve their pitching staff by acquiring Brady Singer this offseason. Despite this addition, their overall pitching depth remains questionable, particularly with health concerns surrounding young talents like Nick Lodolo. Additionally, Andrew Abbott has shown the potential to be a reliable innings-eater, but his elevated FIP compared to his ERA raises concerns about his effectiveness. As such, the Reds would greatly benefit from adding a pitcher of Crochet’s caliber to solidify their rotation and improve their chances of competing in a highly competitive division.

In exploring potential trade scenarios, the Reds may offer promising prospects, such as third baseman Noelvi Marte, who could serve as the centerpiece of a trade package for Crochet. Such a move would address their immediate need for a reliable left-handed starter while allowing the White Sox to build on their farm system with high-potential prospects. This trade discussion exemplifies the shifting dynamics and strategies occurring within MLB as teams look to optimize their rosters ahead of the upcoming season.

Ultimately, the landscape surrounding the pursuit of starting pitchers like Max Fried and Garrett Crochet showcases the Red Sox’s commitment to revitalizing their lineup while navigating a competitive trade market. As the offseason progresses, it will be fascinating to witness how these negotiations unfold and which teams can effectively bolster their pitching rotations, setting themselves up for success in the upcoming season.
