Sauquon Barkley’s 2024 NFL season was a masterclass in running back dominance, a performance so compelling that even rivals like Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons couldn’t help but acknowledge his superiority, declaring him the “best player in the NFL.” Barkley’s season transcended mere statistical achievement; it was a display of consistent excellence, punctuated by game-altering explosiveness that propelled the Philadelphia Eagles to new heights and etched his name into the annals of football history. His journey was one of relentless pursuit of the end zone, a testament to his unwavering determination and exceptional skill.

Barkley’s historic season culminated in a staggering 2,329 total rushing yards, encompassing both regular season and playoff games. This remarkable feat places him in an elite echelon of NFL running backs, alongside legends like Terrell Davis and Eric Dickerson, who also surpassed the 2,200-yard mark in a single season including playoffs. His remarkable consistency was a hallmark of his performance; in 18 total games, he only dipped below 100 rushing yards on five occasions, showcasing his ability to consistently churn out yardage against varying defensive schemes and conditions. Furthermore, he achieved as many 150+ yard games as he did sub-100 yard games, demonstrating his propensity for explosive performances.

The foundation of the Eagles’ league-leading ground game, Barkley amassed 2,005 rushing yards during the regular season, becoming only the ninth player in NFL history to achieve the coveted 2,000-yard milestone. His contributions were not merely about volume; they were about impact. Over 40% of his total yardage came on explosive runs, highlighting his ability to break free from defenses and generate game-changing plays. He shared this rare combination of high volume and high explosiveness with only two other running backs, Derrick Henry and Jahmyr Gibbs, solidifying his position among the league’s most dynamic rushers.

Beyond the sheer volume of yardage, Barkley’s ability to deliver in crucial moments defined his season. A prime example is his electrifying 78-yard touchdown run in the divisional round of the playoffs, a play that effectively sealed the victory for the Eagles. This wasn’t an anomaly but rather a continuation of a season filled with decisive runs, demonstrating Barkley’s knack for seizing control of games and delivering when it mattered most. His presence transformed the Eagles’ offense into a formidable force, capable of dominating opponents on the ground and dictating the pace of the game.

In his inaugural season with the Eagles, Barkley not only shattered the franchise single-season rushing record but also positioned himself firmly in the conversation of all-time great running backs. He stands poised to challenge Terrell Davis’ record for most rushing yards in a single season including playoffs, a testament to his remarkable consistency and explosive playmaking throughout the entire year. His playoff performances, including a franchise-record 205 rushing yards against the Rams in a snowy divisional round victory, further cemented his legacy and showcased his ability to elevate his game on the biggest stage.

Barkley’s exceptional season garnered him widespread recognition and accolades, including being named an AP All-Pro, an NFLPA All-Pro, and earning his third Pro Bowl selection. He also emerged as a finalist for prestigious awards like the AP MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, further solidifying his status as one of the league’s premier players. However, perhaps the most compelling testament to his impact is the unsolicited praise from rivals, showcasing the universal respect he has earned within the NFL community. Micah Parsons’ declaration of Barkley as the “best player in the NFL” encapsulates the profound impact of his historic season.
