Hidetaka Miyazaki, the president of FromSoftware, recently provided insights into the future of the company’s game development during an interview after receiving the Grand Award at the 2024 PlayStation Partner Awards in Japan. One of the most significant revelations from Miyazaki is that there are currently no plans for a sequel to the critically acclaimed game, Elden Ring, which won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2022. He emphasized that while there are no immediate considerations for “Elden Ring 2,” the Elden Ring IP itself remains viable for future projects. This distinction hints at the potential for new stories or expansions within the Elden Ring universe but not necessarily a direct sequel.

Miyazaki discussed the multitude of projects currently under development at FromSoftware, elaborating that the studio is pursuing various creative endeavors. He indicated that fans should expect a diverse lineup of games, including those directed by him and other directors within the company. This approach aligns with FromSoftware’s tradition of exploring different themes and genres while still retaining the core elements that define the studio’s unique style. The mention of multiple projects suggests a robust creative output, which may include entirely new concepts as well as potential revivals of older franchises, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter for the company.

Among the notable projects poised for release is “Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree,” a major expansion for Elden Ring that has garnered a nomination for Game of the Year at this year’s Game Awards. The successful reception of this expansion could further bolster the Elden Ring IP, reinforcing its significance in the gaming landscape. Despite the absence of a sequel, the expansion serves to enrich the existing world, allowing fans to delve deeper into its lore and experience more of its captivating gameplay, which blends exploration with challenging combat.

In addition to the Elden Ring expansion, the release of “Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon” marks a pivot for FromSoftware into the mech-combat genre. This exploration of different gaming genres exemplifies the studio’s willingness to diversify its portfolio and engage with fresh concepts. By branching out from the well-trodden path of dark fantasy and action role-playing games, FromSoftware showcases its versatility as a developer, potentially drawing in new audiences and revitalizing interest in lesser-known franchises from their past, such as King’s Field.

The anticipation surrounding FromSoftware’s future projects is palpable, as Miyazaki’s assurance of new gameplay experiences encourages fans to remain optimistic. The director’s mention of varied projects hints at innovation and experiments in game design, which have long been hallmarks of the studio’s history. By embracing different gameplay mechanics and aesthetic styles, FromSoftware can maintain its reputation for quality while also surprising its audience with unexpected creative directions.

In conclusion, while there are no forthcoming plans for Elden Ring 2, FromSoftware’s future looks promising with a wealth of projects in development. The continued expansion of the Elden Ring universe, alongside the exploration of new genres, demonstrates the company’s commitment to innovation and the evolution of their storytelling. As fans of the studio eagerly await announcements of these mysterious new titles, the blend of nostalgia for past franchises and excitement for original creations will undoubtedly capture the interest of gamers worldwide. With Miyazaki at the helm, the journey ahead for FromSoftware promises to be both intriguing and dynamic, as they navigate new paths in the gaming industry.
