Daycare Worker Arrested for Alleged Child Abandonment and Endangerment

This incident revolves around Anna Petrou, a 58-year-old daycare worker at The Learning Lab Preschool & Childcare in Homewood, Illinois. She faces child endangerment charges after allegedly leaving a four-year-old boy in her care outside in freezing temperatures and later placing him in a trash can. The incident unfolded on January 13th, when temperatures plummeted to a frigid 19 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the Homewood Police Department, Petrou placed the child in an alleyway outside the daycare center for approximately 20 seconds because he refused to take a nap. This act alone exposed the young child to potentially dangerous weather conditions.

The situation escalated further upon the child’s return inside the facility. Surveillance footage captured Petrou placing the four-year-old inside an empty garbage bin, purportedly as a form of punishment. Disturbingly, this act was carried out in front of other children and staff members. The child’s parents, Monica Forte and Justin Barnes, were understandably horrified when they learned about the incident after picking up their son from daycare. The video footage confirmed their worst fears, revealing the extent of Petrou’s actions. They reported the incident to the police immediately, setting in motion the investigation that led to Petrou’s arrest.

The parents’ reactions underscore the emotional distress caused by this incident. Forte expressed her shock and disbelief, particularly after viewing the surveillance footage. She voiced concerns about her son’s well-being, noting his clinginess since the incident. Barnes echoed his partner’s sentiments, expressing his worry about the emotional impact on their son. Both parents are adamant that their children will not be returning to The Learning Lab. They are also exploring legal options to hold Petrou accountable for her actions and ensure such an incident never happens again.

Petrou’s defense, claiming her actions were a joke, did little to mitigate the seriousness of the charges. The police and the daycare center took the matter seriously. The Homewood Police Department charged Petrou with endangering the life of a child, a misdemeanor offense. While she was released from custody pending a future court date, the incident had immediate repercussions for her employment. The Learning Lab swiftly terminated Petrou’s employment, demonstrating their commitment to addressing the situation and protecting the children in their care.

The daycare center’s response also extended to another employee who witnessed the incident but failed to intervene. This second employee was also fired, underscoring the center’s policy of zero tolerance for such behavior and their commitment to ensuring a safe environment for the children. The Learning Lab issued a statement acknowledging their cooperation with the family, the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), and the Homewood Police Department. They emphasized their commitment to transparency and shared additional information they uncovered during their internal investigation, acknowledging the need for further action.

This incident raises several critical issues regarding childcare safety and appropriate disciplinary practices. Leaving a young child unattended in freezing temperatures, even for a short period, can have serious health consequences. Furthermore, placing a child in a trash can as a form of punishment is not only inappropriate but also potentially traumatizing. The incident highlights the importance of vigilant supervision, proper training for daycare staff, and clear protocols for addressing challenging behavior in children. The Learning Lab’s response, including the termination of both employees, indicates a commitment to rectifying the situation and preventing future incidents. However, the incident will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the affected child and his family, emphasizing the need for continuous improvement in childcare practices and oversight.
