Diontae Johnson Waived by Texans Before Chiefs Playoff Match

Diontae Johnson, a name that has resonated more with roster transactions than on-field performances this season, finds himself once again searching for a new team. The Houston Texans, his most recent employer, waived the wide receiver on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, marking his fifth NFL team in a calendar year. This whirlwind journey began with the Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by stints with the Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens, and briefly, the Texans. His time in Houston yielded a meager three catches for 24 yards in just two games, a far cry from the expectations that once surrounded him.

Johnson’s turbulent year began with a promising role as the Carolina Panthers’ primary receiving option. However, his tenure there was short-lived, as he was traded to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for a fifth-round pick, with the Panthers receiving a sixth-round pick in return. The trade, seemingly a fresh start, quickly soured as Johnson found himself embroiled in controversy. His refusal to play in Week 13 led to a one-game suspension by the Ravens in Week 14, effectively ending his time in Baltimore.

The Houston Texans, facing a depleted receiving corps due to season-ending injuries to Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell, claimed Johnson off waivers, hoping he could provide much-needed depth. The opportunity, however, proved fleeting. Despite the Texans’ need at the position, Johnson failed to make a significant impact, and his release after just two games underscores the challenges he has faced in maintaining a stable NFL career.

Johnson’s journey through multiple teams in such a short span highlights the precarious nature of a professional football career. While talent and potential may secure an initial spot on a roster, consistent performance and adherence to team expectations are crucial for longevity. Johnson’s struggles to find a consistent role, coupled with his disciplinary issues in Baltimore, have painted a picture of a player struggling to find his footing in the league. The repeated waivers and short-lived stints suggest a disconnect between his perceived potential and his on-field production.

The circumstances surrounding Johnson’s release from each team paint a complex picture. While the details of his departure from Pittsburgh and Carolina remain somewhat unclear, his brief time in Baltimore was marred by his refusal to play and subsequent suspension. This incident undoubtedly raised concerns about his commitment and willingness to contribute to a team. In Houston, despite the opportunity presented by the team’s need at wide receiver, Johnson failed to capitalize, leading to his swift release. This pattern suggests that the issues contributing to his instability extend beyond mere bad luck or lack of opportunity.

Looking ahead, Johnson faces an uphill battle to resurrect his NFL career. Finding a sixth team will likely require not only showcasing his on-field abilities but also demonstrating a renewed commitment to teamwork and discipline. His talent, once promising enough to earn him starting roles, now needs to be coupled with a demonstrable change in attitude and approach. Whether he can overcome these challenges and find a stable home in the NFL remains to be seen. His story serves as a cautionary tale of the unforgiving nature of professional sports, where talent alone is not enough to guarantee success. The coming months will be crucial for Johnson as he seeks to redefine his narrative and prove that he deserves another chance in the league.
