The first chronicle was mounted by German newspaper Welt Am Sonntag, which reported that the EU executive had directed its staff, seeks grants for environmental groups, and even paid working in euros, to promote the bloc’s climate policy. The European Commission denied these allegations.

The right-wing political parties are now efforts to establish a so-called ‘Green Gate’ scandal, as well as to seek an independent investigation for leaks. In the coming weeks, the European Parliament will vote on whether to set up an independent inquiry committee to investigate this scheme. The committee, requested by ERC as part of a pilot program, has been targeted by right-wing lawmakers to include sharp criticism of EU funding for NGOs in its December proposal for the 2023 budget.
