Exclusive: Witness Reports Vehicle Used by Shamsud-Din Jabbar Departing Airbnb Prior to New Orleans Attack

The quiet residential streets surrounding a New Orleans Airbnb were thrust into the heart of a terrorism investigation following a deadly attack on Bourbon Street. Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the perpetrator of the attack, had reportedly rented the property, and the subsequent discovery of his abandoned pickup truck, coupled with the presence of bomb-making materials inside the Airbnb and a small fire, sparked an intense law enforcement response that disrupted the lives of neighborhood residents. A neighbor, identified as Shay, provided crucial eyewitness testimony and surveillance footage that placed Jabbar’s vehicle at the scene just hours before the attack, adding a significant piece to the puzzle surrounding the terrorist’s movements and preparations.

Shay’s detailed account of the events offered investigators valuable information about Jabbar’s presence at the Airbnb. Her home surveillance system captured the distinctive Ford F-150 Lightning, later identified as the vehicle used by Jabbar, leaving the property at approximately 12:25 a.m. on New Year’s Day, just hours before the attack. While Shay had observed the truck parked outside the Airbnb earlier in the day, she noted the absence of the ISIS flag that was later found displayed on the vehicle during the attack. This suggests that Jabbar may have added the flag sometime between leaving the Airbnb and carrying out the attack, potentially indicating a deliberate attempt to link his actions to the terrorist organization.

The discovery of the truck, combined with Shay’s confirmation of its presence at the Airbnb, raised serious concerns about the extent of Jabbar’s planning and the potential for further threats. The subsequent discovery of bomb-making materials inside the rented property heightened these concerns, suggesting that the Bourbon Street attack might have been part of a larger, more complex plot. The presence of these materials transformed the Airbnb from a simple rental property into a potential bomb-making site, dramatically escalating the severity of the investigation.

The unfolding events dramatically impacted the lives of residents in the typically tranquil neighborhood. Shay, along with other residents, was evacuated from her home early on Wednesday morning as law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and bomb squads, descended upon the area. The evacuation, lasting for approximately 12 hours, disrupted daily routines and created an atmosphere of anxiety and uncertainty. The heavy police presence, along with the sight of fire trucks and bomb squads, transformed the familiar streets into a scene reminiscent of a crime thriller, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Another neighbor, 22-year-old Larkin McBride, returned home at 3 a.m. Wednesday to find her block transformed into a hub of emergency response activity. Fire trucks, police vehicles, and bomb squads filled the street, creating a chaotic scene that underscored the seriousness of the situation. The presence of these emergency services, coupled with the street closures that remained in place throughout the day, underscored the magnitude of the investigation and the potential dangers lurking within the seemingly ordinary Airbnb. McBride also reported a distinct smell of burned plastic upon her arrival, though she initially attributed it to leftover fireworks from the New Year’s Eve celebrations. However, in light of the subsequent discovery of a small fire at the Airbnb, the smell of burning plastic takes on a more ominous significance, potentially hinting at activities related to the bomb-making materials found inside the property.

The sequence of events, beginning with Shay’s observation of Jabbar’s truck and culminating in the discovery of bomb-making materials and a small fire at the Airbnb, paints a picture of a carefully planned and potentially devastating attack. The swift response of law enforcement agencies, including the evacuation of residents and the deployment of specialized units, underscores the serious nature of the threat posed by Jabbar and the potential for further violence. The incident highlights the increasing use of short-term rental properties as staging grounds for criminal activity, raising questions about security measures and the potential risks associated with this growing industry. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working tirelessly to piece together the full extent of Jabbar’s plans and determine whether he acted alone or as part of a larger network.
