Florida Dog ‘Trooper,’ Left Tied to Fence During Hurricane Milton, Finds Forever Home as Abusive Ex-Owner Faces Court Date

In a heartwarming turn of events, a young bull terrier, dubbed “Trooper,” who was found tied to a fence during Hurricane Milton in Florida, has finally found a loving home. His previous owner, identified as Giovanny Aldama Garcia, awaits trial for allegedly abandoning the dog in such perilous conditions. Trooper’s rescue, occurring at a time when the storm wreaked havoc across the southern United States, touched many hearts, especially that of Frank and Carla Spina, who have dedicated over 30 years to raising bull terriers. Moved by Trooper’s fate, they were determined to welcome him into their family once they learned of his plight.

The dramatic rescue took place as Hurricane Milton approached landfall. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper discovered Trooper, terrified and tied up, near I-75 in Tampa and successfully pulled him from the impending danger. Following the rescue, the Leon County Humane Society took Trooper into their care and facilitated his transfer to a foster home in Tallahassee, prompted by a call from Governor Ron DeSantis’s office. Throughout Trooper’s recovery, the Spinas stayed informed about his status, ultimately applying to adopt him when applications opened.

In their heartfelt two-page application, which detailed their passion for bull terriers, the Spinas eagerly expressed their desire to welcome Trooper into their lives. However, concerns arose regarding Trooper’s hesitation around men, stemming from his traumatic past with Garcia. Despite these worries, Frank, seasoned in caring for bull terriers, assured the shelter staff of his ability to bond with Trooper. He confidently expressed that the pup would adapt to his new environment swiftly, promising that they would be best friends almost instantly after meeting.

When the Spinas were finally introduced to Trooper, it became clear that he had found his forever family. The immediate connection between them was palpable, contrasting sharply with Trooper’s previous anxious reactions to other people. Shelter workers noted that Trooper appeared comfortable and at ease with Frank and Carla, signifying a “match made in heaven.” To ensure a seamless transition, the couple brought along their female bull terrier, Dallas, and the two dogs instantly clicked, filling the Spinas’ home with excitement and warmth.

Trooper, estimated to be around three years old, has since integrated well into his new household, embracing the love and care that the Spina family provides. On the contrary, his former owner Garcia faces serious allegations of animal cruelty. Caught abandoning Trooper on the interstate as he fled the hurricane, Garcia’s actions sparked outrage. As authorities caught up with him, Garcia confessed to leaving Trooper behind due to his inability to find anyone to take the dog. Such callous treatment garnered a public outcry and condemnation, including remarks made by Governor DeSantis, who deemed the abandonment “totally unacceptable.”

Garcia has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a third-degree felony that could lead to a sentence of up to five years in prison. Hillsborough County State Attorney Suzy Lopez firmly stated that Garcia would not regain custody of Trooper, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. With an arraignment scheduled for December, the justice system prepares to hold Garcia accountable for his actions, even as Trooper finds solace in his newfound family. The story not only highlights the importance of animal welfare but also showcases the power of compassion in transforming lives, both human and animal.
