Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States and the longest-living former president in US history, passed away at the age of 100 in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. A wave of condolences and tributes poured in from across the globe, reflecting the profound impact of his life and work. From fellow US presidents to international leaders, Carter’s legacy of service, compassion, and commitment to peace and human rights resonated deeply. His dedication to these values, both during his presidency and in the decades that followed, cemented his place as a respected statesman and humanitarian. He spent nearly two years in hospice care prior to his passing, following the death of his wife, Rosalynn Carter, the year before.

Tributes from fellow US presidents painted a picture of a man of unwavering integrity and dedication to public service. Former President Barack Obama lauded Carter’s embodiment of grace, dignity, justice, and service, highlighting his repeated choice to alleviate suffering and work for peace. President Joe Biden echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Carter’s extraordinary leadership as a statesman and humanitarian. He praised Carter’s moral clarity and compassion, recognizing his tireless work in eradicating disease, advancing civil rights and human rights, and advocating for the most vulnerable. Biden also acknowledged the deep love shared between Jimmy and Rosalynn, describing their partnership as a model of humble leadership and patriotism.

Former President Donald Trump acknowledged the shared experience of holding the presidency and expressed gratitude for Carter’s efforts to improve the lives of Americans during a pivotal time in the nation’s history. Former President George W. Bush commended Carter’s deeply held convictions, loyalty, and efforts to create a better world. He recognized Carter’s work with Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Center as an inspiring example of service for generations to come. Former President Bill Clinton highlighted Carter’s faith-guided commitment to civil rights, environmental protection, and international diplomacy, specifically noting his work on the Panama Canal treaty and energy conservation.

Beyond the presidential tributes, numerous voices joined in honoring Carter’s legacy. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer described Carter as the embodiment of leadership through service, compassion, and integrity, emphasizing his focus on action over rhetoric and service to others over personal gain. House Speaker Mike Johnson recounted Carter’s life as a testament to the opportunities available in America and recognized his contributions to global peace through the Camp David Accords and to providing housing through Habitat for Humanity. Former Vice President Al Gore underscored Carter’s enduring commitment to building a more just and peaceful world, extending beyond his time in office through his continued leadership in the decades that followed.

The Carter Center, founded by the former president and First Lady, announced his death. Carter’s post-presidency work, particularly with Habitat for Humanity, where he actively participated in building homes for those in need, underscored his commitment to service. His receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 further solidified his global standing as a humanitarian, recognizing his tireless efforts in conflict resolution and promoting human rights. His work with the Carter Center focused on disease eradication, election monitoring, and conflict resolution, leaving an indelible mark on global affairs.

Jimmy Carter’s legacy is one of unwavering commitment to peace, human rights, and service to others. From his humble beginnings as a peanut farmer to his time as president and beyond, he consistently demonstrated a deep sense of compassion and a dedication to improving the lives of people around the world. His life serves as a powerful example of the impact a single individual can have through dedication, integrity, and a resolute focus on making the world a better place. His passing marks the end of an era, but his contributions will continue to inspire future generations to strive for a more just, peaceful, and compassionate world.
