The figure skating world mourns the loss of two young, promising athletes, Everly and Alydia Livingston, who tragically perished alongside their parents in a mid-air collision over the Potomac River. The sisters, aged 14 and 11 respectively, were returning home to Ashburn, Virginia, from the US Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas, where they had participated in the National Development Camp. Known as the “Ice Skating Sisters,” Everly and Alydia were integral members of the Washington Figure Skating Club, their passion for the sport evident in numerous videos and social media posts showcasing their routines. A poignant video interview from the previous year captures Everly, then 13, expressing her aspirations of representing Team USA and competing internationally, a dream tragically cut short.

Everly, described as shy and reserved off the ice, transformed into a dynamic and accomplished skater, securing sectional championships at both the intermediate and juvenile levels. Alydia, her younger sister, shared the same fervent dedication to figure skating. Their final Instagram post, a picture taken at the championships just days before the accident, radiates their youthful enthusiasm and ambition, hinting at their readiness to make their mark on the national stage. Their coach, Inna Volyanskaya, had also recently posted a congratulatory message, praising Everly and her skating partner for their hard work and qualification for the National Development Camp for the second consecutive year.

The devastating crash involved American Airlines Flight 5342, a Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet, and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter. The collision occurred approximately 400 feet above the Potomac River as the plane prepared to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport. Tragically, there were no survivors among the 64 individuals on board the plane, including 60 passengers and 4 crew members, and the three soldiers in the helicopter. The figure skating community suffered a profound loss, with 14 members, including skaters, coaches, and parents, perishing in the accident.

The Livingston sisters were not merely aspiring athletes; they were beloved members of a tight-knit community, their loss leaving a gaping void. Their dedication, passion, and potential shone brightly, leaving behind a legacy that will undoubtedly inspire future generations of skaters. Their story serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. The figure skating world has lost two rising stars, and their absence will be deeply felt.

The accident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the inherent risks associated with air travel and the devastating consequences that can arise from unforeseen circumstances. The investigation into the cause of the collision will undoubtedly be thorough and comprehensive, aiming to prevent similar tragedies in the future. While the focus remains on understanding the events that led to the crash, the immediate priority is providing support and comfort to the grieving families and communities affected by this immense loss.

The outpouring of grief and support from the figure skating community and beyond reflects the profound impact Everly and Alydia had on those who knew them and those who were touched by their story. Their memory will live on, not only through the videos and photos that capture their grace and skill on the ice but also through the countless lives they touched with their passion and dedication. As the figure skating world navigates this profound loss, the Livingston sisters’ legacy will serve as a source of inspiration and a reminder of the power of dreams and the importance of pursuing them with unwavering commitment.
