Optimal 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV Configurations

The Chevrolet Equinox EV, marketed as an entry-level electric SUV for families, aims to capture a segment of the market seeking affordability, practicality, and familiar branding. Its competitive pricing, family-friendly size, and established name recognition position it to appeal to a broad audience, particularly those with daily commutes averaging around 40 miles. The 2025 model, now available at dealerships, comes in LT and RS trims, with front-wheel or all-wheel drive options. Optional packages offer enhancements like Super Cruise, a hands-free driving technology, and upgraded seating features. Newsweek’s road test focused on the 2024 Equinox EV 2LT, evaluating its performance in various driving scenarios, from highway commutes to everyday errands. This review delves into both the strengths and weaknesses of the Equinox EV based on real-world driving experience, highlighting features that resonate and areas requiring improvement.

The standout feature of the Equinox EV is undeniably Super Cruise. This advanced driver-assist system lives up to its reputation as one of the best on the market. Its lane keeping and lane changing capabilities are remarkably smooth and intuitive, enhancing both comfort and safety on long drives and commutes. The added convenience and reduced driver fatigue make Super Cruise a worthwhile investment for anyone regularly undertaking longer journeys. Another positive aspect is the inclusion of redundant climate controls. While the large infotainment touchscreen offers climate adjustments, the presence of physical dials provides a quicker and potentially safer alternative. This dual approach caters to different preferences and driving conditions, offering flexibility and ease of use.

However, the Equinox EV is not without its drawbacks. The steering wheel-mounted controls, while intended to enhance convenience, suffer from a lack of tactile differentiation. The buttons controlling seek/skip and volume functions feel too similar, especially when wearing gloves, leading to frustration and potential distraction. This design oversight undermines the intended purpose of keeping the driver’s hands on the wheel. Another puzzling design choice is the small, oddly shaped storage compartment in the center console. While it might accommodate a pen, a sideways smartphone, or perhaps a small food item, its limited functionality raises questions about its purpose. It appears to be a byproduct of cost-cutting measures, utilizing existing parts without considering practical application.

Perhaps the most glaring flaw in the Equinox EV’s design is the absence of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. This omission forces iPhone users to navigate music selections through a cumbersome folder system, a relic of a pre-smartphone integration era. This outdated approach is not just inconvenient; it’s a significant oversight in today’s connected world. In a market where seamless smartphone integration is expected, this deficiency makes the Equinox EV feel dated and out of step with consumer expectations. Chevrolet needs to address this shortcoming to remain competitive.

To summarize the strengths and weaknesses: Super Cruise proves to be a valuable asset, enhancing highway driving experiences. The dual climate controls offer both convenience and flexibility. On the other hand, the poorly differentiated steering wheel controls and the oddly designed center console storage compartment represent design missteps. The most significant drawback, however, is the lack of Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, which forces a clunky and outdated music selection process for iPhone users.

The Chevrolet Equinox EV holds promise as an affordable and practical electric SUV for families. It delivers on some key features, such as Super Cruise and redundant climate controls. However, addressing the shortcomings, particularly the lack of Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and the confusing steering wheel controls, is crucial for the Equinox EV to fully realize its potential and compete effectively in the evolving EV market. Chevrolet needs to prioritize these improvements to enhance the user experience and appeal to a wider range of tech-savvy consumers.
