Report: Bengals Finalizing Deal to Hire Notre Dame Defensive Coordinator Al Golden

The Cincinnati Bengals, despite boasting an impressive offensive lineup spearheaded by quarterback Joe Burrow and dynamic receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, fell short of securing a playoff berth in the 2024 NFL season. The team’s defensive struggles throughout the season were largely attributed to their shortcomings, although they showed some improvement towards the end. Seeking to bolster their defense, the Bengals parted ways with their previous defensive coordinator, Lou Anarumo, and launched a search for a fresh perspective and leadership. Their search has seemingly culminated in the appointment of Al Golden, previously the defensive coordinator for the University of Notre Dame, marking a return to Cincinnati for the experienced coach.

Al Golden’s return to the Bengals signifies a reunion, as he previously served as the team’s linebackers coach for two seasons before transitioning to Notre Dame. His tenure with the Fighting Irish provided him with valuable experience in shaping and leading a collegiate defense. The Bengals are now entrusting him with the responsibility of revitalizing their NFL defense, hoping that his prior familiarity with the organization combined with his more recent experience will prove beneficial in building a more formidable unit. The announcement, as reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, indicates that the deal is in its final stages, and Golden is expected to formally sign the agreement in Cincinnati shortly.

The Bengals’ decision to appoint Al Golden as their defensive coordinator reflects their determination to address the defensive issues that hampered their progress in the 2024 season. The team’s offensive prowess, led by Burrow, Chase, and Higgins, clearly demonstrated the potential for success, but the lack of a consistently strong defensive performance held them back. Golden’s task will be to mold the Bengals’ defense into a more cohesive and effective unit, capable of complementing the team’s offensive firepower. This appointment marks a significant step in the Bengals’ offseason strategy to restructure and strengthen their roster.

Golden’s experience as a linebackers coach with the Bengals will provide him with valuable insights into the team’s personnel and defensive schemes. This prior understanding of the organization’s culture and dynamics will be instrumental in facilitating a smooth transition into his new role. Furthermore, his time as Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator provided him with the opportunity to develop and implement his own defensive philosophies, potentially bringing innovative strategies and approaches to the Bengals’ defense. The combination of his previous experience within the Bengals organization and his more recent leadership role at Notre Dame positions Golden well to address the team’s defensive needs.

The Bengals’ move to appoint Golden comes amidst other coaching changes within the NFL, including the New England Patriots’ hiring of Mike Vrabel, who also added a former Detroit Lions coach to his staff. These changes underscore the constant evolution of coaching staffs within the league as teams strive to find the right combinations of experience and expertise to maximize their chances of success. The Bengals’ decision to bring back a familiar face in Al Golden represents their belief that his experience and leadership qualities can provide the necessary impetus for defensive improvement.

The upcoming 2025 season will be a critical test for Al Golden and the Bengals’ revamped defense. The pressure will be on to demonstrate significant improvement and contribute to the team’s overall success. The Bengals’ offensive potential remains undeniable, and with a stronger defensive performance, they could emerge as serious contenders in their division and beyond. Golden’s ability to implement his defensive strategies effectively and maximize the potential of the Bengals’ defensive players will be crucial to the team’s fortunes in the upcoming season. The NFL community will be watching closely to see how Golden reshapes the Bengals’ defense and how this impacts their overall performance.
