Lee Greenwood, the iconic voice behind the patriotic anthem “God Bless the U.S.A.,” expressed his support for fellow performer Carrie Underwood amidst the criticism she faced for agreeing to sing at Donald Trump’s inauguration. Greenwood, who has shared the stage with Underwood at prestigious events like the Country Music Awards, lamented the negativity directed at her and urged critics to accept the outcome of the election and show respect for the incoming president. He emphasized that Trump’s inauguration was a significant national event and that artists performing should be thanked for their participation, not subjected to vitriol. Greenwood, a seasoned performer at presidential inaugurations, having previously sung for both Trump and George H.W. Bush, highlighted the heightened security surrounding this particular event due to the recent attempt on Trump’s life.

Greenwood described the personal invitation he received from Trump to perform at the inauguration. While visiting Mar-a-Lago with his wife, Kimberly Payne, a former Miss Tennessee, Trump directly requested his participation, signifying the president’s appreciation for Greenwood’s patriotic anthem. Having performed at six Republican National Conventions, Greenwood recalled a particularly poignant moment introducing Trump at a rally after the then-presidential candidate was attacked. Describing the scene, he painted a picture of a cautious, concerned Donald Trump Jr. carefully surveying the crowd, searching for any potential threats. This incident, Greenwood believes, underscored the seriousness of the political climate and the potential risks involved in public appearances.

Greenwood recounted the tense atmosphere at the rally where Trump had been attacked, noting the heightened security and the palpable concern for the candidate’s safety. He described Trump’s slow, deliberate movements as he approached the stage, a stark contrast to his usual energetic demeanor. Greenwood took his cues from Donald Trump Jr., who was visibly anxious and scanning the crowd for potential threats. The gravity of the situation resonated deeply with Greenwood, making it a particularly memorable performance in his long career. He emphasized the vulnerability of public figures and the constant need for vigilance in a politically charged environment.

The veteran singer, no stranger to performing in potentially dangerous environments, acknowledged the inherent risks associated with high-profile events. Having previously experienced gunfire during a USO tour, Greenwood affirmed his unwavering commitment to performing and his confidence in the security measures in place. Drawing parallels to Trump’s own courage in the face of threats, Greenwood asserted his determination to stand tall and fulfill his patriotic duty. He underscored the importance of resilience and unwavering resolve, particularly during times of uncertainty and potential danger.

Greenwood vividly recalled the electrifying atmosphere surrounding Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden, describing throngs of supporters lining the streets, waving flags and eagerly awaiting the president’s arrival. He shared an anecdote about interacting with enthusiastic supporters who recognized him as he approached the venue, further illustrating the magnetic pull of Trump’s rallies. The massive crowds, both inside and outside the arena, demonstrated the enduring appeal of Trump’s persona and the fervent support he commanded, even in traditionally Democratic strongholds like New York City.

Beyond the political stage, Greenwood revealed a more personal side of Trump, describing him as a physically imposing figure with a warm, if unexpectedly strong, embrace. He recalled moments on stage where Trump would deviate from the usual formal handshake and instead offer a powerful bear hug, a gesture that surprised and impressed the country singer. Greenwood also commented on the resurgence of his song “God Bless the U.S.A.” under Trump’s presidency, acknowledging the financial benefits he has reaped from its renewed popularity. He expressed gratitude to Trump for reintroducing the song to a wider audience, contributing to a significant increase in streams and downloads. This renewed interest underscores the song’s enduring appeal and its continued resonance with a segment of the American population.
