Tragic Loss: 17-Year-Old High School Hockey Player Connor Kasin Dies After Collapsing on Ice During Game in New York

A tragic incident unfolded during a charity hockey game in honor of a late student, resulting in the death of 17-year-old Connor Kasin, a senior at Massapequa High School. The event was held at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage on a Saturday evening, commemorating Sabrina Navarett, a Syosset graduate who lost her life in a car crash the previous year. During an intermission of the match, Kasin suffered a medical emergency and collapsed on the ice. In the immediate chaos, bystanders rushed to his aid, providing CPR as they awaited the arrival of emergency medical services. Sadly, Kasin was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the medical episode, although the Nassau County Police Department has stated that there is no suspicion of criminal activity related to Kasin’s collapse. While officials work to determine what led to this unexpected tragedy, Massapequa High School has taken steps to support its students and families. In a heartfelt letter issued over the weekend, school administrators expressed their deep sorrow over Kasin’s death, emphasizing the substantial impact of this loss on the community. They have made grief counseling available to help students cope during this difficult time of mourning.

Connor Kasin was not only a beloved student but also an athlete who played for the Sharks Elite Youth Hockey team. His passion for the sport and dedication to his teammates were notable, and his coach, Jeff Tempone, described him as a “coach’s dream.” Tempone recalled Kasin as a player who embodied enthusiasm for hockey, always encouraging and supporting his fellow teammates. His passing has left a void in the team and among the players who admired him, prompting Tempone to express the overwhelming sense of loss felt by the community for a young life taken too soon.

The charity game itself, held in memory of Sabrina Navarett, was intended as a celebration of her life and an effort to support those coping with loss through scholarships and community services. The Navarett family, deeply affected by Kasin’s death, issued a statement conveying their heartbreak over the situation. They extended condolences to Kasin’s family and reassured them of their support during this time. John and Mara Navarett emphasized the community’s spirit of remembrance and kindness, urging parents and individuals navigating grief to allow themselves time to heal.

As news of Kasin’s death spread, tributes poured in from peers, coaches, and community members, each sharing the profound impact he had on their lives. Kasin’s life, though tragically cut short, was characterized by enthusiasm for life, camaraderie among teammates, and a promising future ahead of him. He was regarded as a bright young man with so much potential, and those who knew him grieved not only for the loss of his life but also for the future achievements that he would never get the chance to realize.

This tragic episode stands as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the unexpected nature of personal crises. The Massapequa community is left grappling with two bereavements: the loss of Connor Kasin and the memory of Sabrina Navarett. Both events emphasize the vital importance of community, support systems, and the need for open conversations regarding grief and loss. In the coming days and weeks, the focus will be on healing and remembrance, as the community comes together to honor the memories of these young lives and support the families left behind.
