Federal Authorities Release Timeline of Pre-Attack Surveillance by Perpetrator in New Orleans

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released a detailed account of the events leading up to the devastating New Year’s Eve terrorist attack in New Orleans, shedding light on the movements and motivations of the perpetrator, Shamsud-Din Jabbar. The 42-year-old Army veteran, acting alone, drove a rented Ford pickup truck through a crowd of revelers on Bourbon Street, claiming the lives of 14 people and injuring dozens more before being fatally shot by police in the ensuing exchange of gunfire. The attack, inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS), has sent shockwaves through the nation and prompted a thorough investigation into Jabbar’s background and possible connections.

Jabbar’s international travel history has emerged as a key focus of the investigation. The FBI has confirmed that Jabbar traveled to Cairo, Egypt, from June 22nd to July 3rd, 2023. Following this trip, he flew to Ontario, Canada, before returning to the United States. The purpose of these travels remains under scrutiny, as investigators work to determine whether they played a role in the planning or execution of the attack. The FBI is specifically exploring whether Jabbar established contact with any individuals or groups overseas who may have provided support or encouragement.

Adding to the complexity of the investigation are Jabbar’s documented visits to New Orleans in the months preceding the attack. He made at least two trips to the city, one in October and another in November, utilizing Meta smart glasses to capture video footage of the eventual attack site. While the precise significance of these trips remains uncertain, the FBI is meticulously examining whether they served as reconnaissance missions, allowing Jabbar to familiarize himself with the area and potentially select a target. This information raises questions about the level of premeditation involved in the attack and strengthens the possibility of a carefully planned assault.

The discovery of a black ISIS flag within the rented truck, coupled with online videos posted by Jabbar just hours before the attack in which he pledged allegiance to the terrorist organization, solidifies the connection between the attack and ISIS ideology. This evidence paints a clear picture of Jabbar’s radicalization and his commitment to the extremist group’s cause. The FBI’s investigation is actively pursuing any potential links between Jabbar and ISIS operatives, both domestically and internationally, to ascertain whether he received any direct instructions, training, or logistical support from the organization.

While the FBI currently asserts that Jabbar acted alone in carrying out the attack, the investigation remains ongoing, and all possibilities are being considered. The agency is diligently pursuing any leads that could reveal the existence of accomplices or collaborators. The focus on Jabbar’s international travel and his pre-attack visits to New Orleans underscores the importance of understanding the full extent of his planning and preparation, as well as the potential influence of external factors. The FBI is committed to uncovering every detail surrounding this horrific event to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The New Orleans attack serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat of terrorism and the need for continued vigilance. The investigation into Jabbar’s actions represents a crucial step in understanding the motivations and methods of individuals who embrace extremist ideologies. By thoroughly examining all aspects of this tragedy, law enforcement agencies can enhance their ability to identify and disrupt potential threats, ultimately working towards a safer and more secure society. The families and friends of the victims, as well as the entire New Orleans community, deserve answers, and the FBI’s dedicated efforts are aimed at providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the events that led to this senseless loss of life.
