Lyft Driver in Texas Assaulted and Carjacked by Passenger

The unsettling narrative of Dilaver Berk, a 25-year-old Lyft driver, serves as a stark reminder of the lurking dangers faced by ride-share drivers. Berk, a Turkish immigrant who relocated to Texas in the preceding year, became a victim of a brutal attack while carrying out his duties on a seemingly ordinary Monday evening. The attack, orchestrated by a 19-year-old passenger identified as Antwain Williams, left Berk with severe injuries, including a slashed throat and deep gashes on his hands, requiring extensive stitching and bandaging. The incident unfolded as Berk drove Williams to his designated destination, the Legends at Legacy Apartments in Frisco, Texas. Upon reaching the apartment complex, Williams, instead of exiting the vehicle, launched a vicious assault on Berk from behind.

The attack began with Williams slashing Berk’s throat multiple times with a knife. As Berk instinctively raised his hands to defend himself, they too were severely lacerated. Williams then attempted to strangle Berk with a wire or cable, further intensifying the already brutal attack. Despite the terrifying ordeal, Berk, in a desperate attempt to survive, pleaded with his attacker, offering him anything he wanted in exchange for his life. The chilling details of the attack were relayed by Berk’s friend, Dustin Tovi, who described the sheer terror and desperation of the situation. Tovi emphasized Berk’s hardworking nature and the injustice of the attack, highlighting the devastating impact on someone who strives to earn an honest living.

Following the violent assault, Williams stole Berk’s Toyota Camry, leaving the injured driver bleeding in the apartment complex’s parking lot. Fortunately, a compassionate bystander witnessed the aftermath of the attack and promptly called 911, ensuring Berk received the necessary medical attention. This quick intervention likely saved Berk’s life, allowing him to be transported to the hospital and treated for his extensive injuries. While he has since been discharged from the hospital, he remains bedridden as he recovers from the physical and emotional trauma of the ordeal.

The stolen vehicle, a crucial piece of evidence in the unfolding investigation, did not remain elusive for long. Hours after the attack, a vigilant patrol officer located the stolen Toyota Camry near Highway 423 and Rockhill. When officers attempted a traffic stop, Williams initiated a high-speed chase in an attempt to evade capture. The pursuit culminated in a crash, after which Williams attempted to flee on foot but was ultimately apprehended by law enforcement. The arrest brought a sense of relief and justice, though the scars of the traumatic event will undoubtedly linger for Berk.

The suspect, Antwain Williams, now faces serious charges stemming from the incident. He is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, as well as evading arrest. Further investigation unearthed an existing outstanding warrant against Williams for allegedly encouraging a child to perform a sex act, adding another layer of gravity to the case. Williams is currently being held at the Denton County Jail while awaiting trial. This additional charge reveals a disturbing pattern of criminal behaviour and raises concerns about the potential danger Williams posed to the community.

This incident sheds light on the vulnerabilities faced by ride-share drivers, who often work alone and interact with strangers in isolated environments. Berk, a hardworking immigrant sending money back home to support his family, was simply trying to earn a living when he became the victim of a senseless act of violence. His story underscores the need for increased safety measures for ride-share drivers and highlights the risks associated with this profession. The incident serves as a call for enhanced security protocols and a greater focus on driver safety within the ride-sharing industry. This could involve improved background checks for passengers, in-app safety features, and potentially even physical barriers within vehicles to protect drivers from potential attacks.
