The New York Police Department (NYPD) is actively pursuing a unique and increasingly dangerous robber who has been dubbed the “Haggler After Midnight.” This moniker stems from his unusual modus operandi, which involves engaging in a bizarre form of negotiation with his victims during the commission of his crimes. Since early November, this individual has targeted 11 individuals in the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, primarily focusing on Hispanic men between the ages of 20 and 40 who are returning home from work in the late night or early morning hours.

The suspect’s approach is characterized by a distinctive pattern. He typically arrives at the scene on a blue or dark-colored motorized scooter, then confronts his victims with a knife. However, instead of immediately seizing their valuables, he engages in a peculiar dialogue, often in both English and Spanish, where he “haggles” with them over which possessions he will take. He rejects initial offerings, prompting his victims to produce additional items until he finds something to his liking, primarily cash and electronics. This unusual negotiation tactic sets him apart from typical muggers and has earned him the nickname “Haggler After Midnight.”

The NYPD has released details about the suspect’s methodology and physical description to aid in his apprehension. He is described as a male, usually wearing a dark-colored helmet and jacket, further concealing his identity. The scooter he uses is also a key identifying feature. Authorities believe that the suspect is strategically selecting his victims, targeting individuals he perceives as vulnerable and less likely to resist. The fact that the victims are often walking alone late at night or early in the morning in relatively isolated areas suggests that the perpetrator is carefully choosing locations that minimize the risk of witnesses or intervention.

The “Haggler After Midnight” case has raised concerns within the NYPD due to the escalating nature of the suspect’s actions. While the initial robberies involved primarily property theft, the most recent incident, which occurred on December 10th, marked a significant escalation in violence. In this instance, the suspect held a knife to the victim’s throat, demonstrating a heightened willingness to use force and posing a greater threat to the safety of his victims. Although no physical injuries have been reported thus far, the increasing boldness of the attacks suggests a potential for future escalation, prompting the NYPD to prioritize the apprehension of this individual.

The NYPD is appealing to the public for assistance in identifying and apprehending the “Haggler After Midnight.” They have released information about the suspect’s physical description, his method of operation, and the type of vehicle he uses, hoping that someone will recognize him and come forward with information. Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for any information that leads to the suspect’s arrest and conviction, highlighting the seriousness with which law enforcement is treating this case. The NYPD is urging anyone with information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, to contact them immediately.

The “Haggler After Midnight” case highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing evolving criminal tactics. The suspect’s unusual approach, combined with the late-night timing and targeted selection of victims, makes him a difficult individual to apprehend. The NYPD’s efforts to publicize the case and engage the public’s assistance are crucial in their efforts to bring this individual to justice and prevent further escalation of his criminal activities. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of public vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement in maintaining public safety.
