Two Teenage Brothers Missing Following Duck Hunting Incident

The disappearance of two teenage brothers, Wesley and Andruw Cornett, has cast a pall of grief and uncertainty over Butte County, California. The brothers, aged 17 and 19 respectively, ventured out on a duck hunting trip to the Thermatilo Afterbay on December 14, 2024, a day marked by severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and strong winds. Their excursion took a tragic turn when Wesley’s kayak capsized, prompting Andruw to bravely jump into the frigid waters in a desperate attempt to rescue his younger brother. Neither of the boys has been seen since that fateful Saturday, leaving their family and community reeling from the devastating incident.

The initial emergency response swiftly transitioned into a large-scale search operation involving approximately 250 personnel from 21 different organizations, including the Butte County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), their Aviation and Marine Unit, Search and Rescue teams, and numerous volunteers. The search efforts encompassed thousands of acres, employing boats, ground crews, and rafts to scour the vast expanse of the Afterbay. The challenging terrain, characterized by dense weed growth at the bottom of the reservoir, significantly hampered the search, requiring specialized diving teams to navigate the submerged vegetation. The inclement weather that plagued the region on the day of the disappearance further complicated the search, with high winds and torrential rain creating hazardous conditions for the rescue teams.

Despite the relentless efforts and extensive resources deployed, the search yielded no sign of the missing brothers. The sheriff’s office has since reclassified the operation from a rescue mission to a recovery effort, a heartbreaking acknowledgment of the diminishing hopes of finding the teenagers alive. The relentless search, however, continues, driven by a commitment to bring closure to the grieving family and provide them with the solace of laying their sons to rest.

The Cornett family, grappling with the unimaginable loss of their two sons, is struggling to comprehend the sudden tragedy. Their mother, April Clark, has launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Help April Clark Find and Honor Her Sons,” seeking financial assistance to support the ongoing search efforts and, ultimately, to cover the funeral expenses. In the poignant description accompanying the fundraiser, Clark described Andruw’s selfless act of courage as he plunged into the turbulent waters to save his brother, hailing him as a hero. She expressed the profound heartbreak that she and her family are enduring, especially with four daughters at home who still require their care and attention during this incredibly difficult time. The family’s plea for support reflects their deep desire to bring their sons home and provide them with a proper farewell.

The tragedy has deeply resonated within the community, prompting an outpouring of support and sympathy for the Cornett family. Local residents have rallied together, offering assistance, sharing updates, and expressing their condolences. The widespread media coverage of the incident has further amplified public awareness, highlighting the dangers of recreational activities in adverse weather conditions and the importance of water safety measures.

The ongoing search for Wesley and Andruw Cornett serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable forces of nature and the fragility of life. The incident underscores the importance of exercising caution and preparedness when engaging in outdoor activities, especially during periods of inclement weather. As the search continues, the community remains united in its hope for a resolution, offering solace and support to the grieving family as they navigate this unimaginable loss. The story of the Cornett brothers serves as a poignant example of brotherly love and the devastating consequences that can arise from unforeseen circumstances.
