Kristi Noem, the current Governor of South Dakota, has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This nomination has garnered significant support from law enforcement organizations, most notably the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC), representing approximately 18,000 Border Patrol agents. The NBPC has formally endorsed Noem, urging the Senate to swiftly confirm her nomination. They highlight Noem’s executive experience as Governor and her prior service in the U.S. House of Representatives as evidence of her leadership capabilities. The NBPC emphasizes her proactive stance on border security, citing her deployment of South Dakota National Guard troops to support Texas’ Operation Lone Star, an initiative aimed at addressing the ongoing border crisis. This deployment, they argue, demonstrates her commitment to securing the border and protecting American citizens. The NBPC expresses confidence in Noem’s ability to ensure Border Patrol agents receive the necessary resources and manpower to effectively fulfill their duties.

Noem’s nomination is further bolstered by endorsements from other prominent law enforcement groups, including the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers in the United States. The FOP has also written letters to both President-elect Trump and Senator Rand Paul, expressing their strong support for Noem’s confirmation. They cite her long-standing alliance with the FOP, both during her time in the House of Representatives and as Governor of South Dakota, highlighting her commitment to the rule of law and public safety. This broad support from law enforcement underscores the widespread recognition of Noem’s dedication to strengthening border security and maintaining public order. Her decisive actions in addressing the border crisis and her commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies position her as a strong candidate to lead the DHS.

Noem’s approach to border security is characterized by a proactive and assertive stance. She has repeatedly deployed South Dakota National Guard troops to the southern border in Texas, aiming to curb illegal immigration and combat drug trafficking. Her actions reflect a commitment to addressing the border crisis directly, providing tangible support to border enforcement efforts. Noem views the border situation as a critical national security issue, requiring decisive action to protect American communities. Her willingness to deploy National Guard troops demonstrates her resolve to address the challenges posed by illegal immigration and the associated criminal activities.

Beyond her focus on border security, Noem has gained national attention for her conservative stance on various issues. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she notably resisted lockdown orders and mask mandates, differentiating herself from leaders in more liberal states. This stance garnered her significant praise from conservatives, solidifying her position as a prominent figure within the Republican Party. Her decisive leadership during the pandemic further bolstered her image as a strong executive, capable of making difficult decisions in challenging circumstances.

Trump’s decision to nominate Noem comes on the heels of his successful presidential campaign, during which he emphasized a commitment to ending the border crisis and combating the opioid epidemic. Noem’s selection aligns with these campaign promises, signaling a focus on strengthening border security and addressing national security concerns. Trump has praised Noem’s strong stance on border security, citing her deployment of National Guard troops to Texas as evidence of her commitment to addressing the border crisis. He has expressed confidence in her ability to work effectively with “Border Czar” Tom Homan to secure the border and protect the American homeland.

As Noem begins the confirmation process, she has initiated meetings with Senate lawmakers to garner support for her nomination. She has engaged in discussions with both Republican and Democratic senators, emphasizing the importance of bipartisan cooperation on homeland security issues. Her initial meetings suggest a willingness to work across the aisle to address national security concerns, potentially facilitating a smoother confirmation process. Noem’s focus on collaboration and her demonstrated commitment to border security position her as a potentially effective leader of the Department of Homeland Security.
