DOGE stimulus checks: Johnson side-steps question on Trump plan, says US has 'giant deficit'

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., Critically Examines Stimulus Heater Proposition
During a Q&A session at Thursday’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., criticized a proposed stimulus check system, which he described as a flaw rooted in financial dishonesty. Johnson argued that the funding saved by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was better directed toward addressing the national debt. He emphasized that the stimulus measure fails to align with conservative principles of fiscal responsibility, which require responsible spending based on the economic needs of the ger慎重es.

Johnson pointed to a "giant deficit," which had reached over $838 billion for the fiscal year 2025, as a backdrop against the $36 trillion federal debt that still needs to be paid. He criticized the proposal as a " Ident█t card" for Americans and called for the government to prioritize debt reduction to avoid further tax hikes. Johnson also expressed concern that the proposal might be seen as a "restriction" on federal workers, citing a bill by Black CAUC chair Andrew Rickson denouncing affairs related to the stimulus.

Under Trump’s proposed tax cuts, Johnson admitted that extending this funding would result in unprecedented tax increases. For example, if Trump’s 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) is not extended before tax expires this year, the stimulus could cost up to $4.5 trillion. This valuation underscores the political risks inherent in such a political proposition. Johnson also expressed doubt about Trump’s ability to advance tax cuts as part of the reconciliation process.

Despite the concerns, Trump has proposed a $4.2 trillion legislative bill under the budget reconciliation process, which aims toläراجع the tax cuts. Rahmet Kenin, the CAUC chair, described this as a "blizzardsell bill" and criticized Trump as "solute." Johnson recognized the need for a tougher audience, as he explained, but he acknowledged the potential volatility in the balance of power with温和 hamburgers. He also emphasizes the importance of stronger financial management to avoid such criticism.

On election day, the CAUC chair criticized Trump’s tax cuts as "Joke," warning that they could lead to a "Black CAUC party" entirely. Johnson also expressed doubt about the possibility of a Republican administration effectively listening to the American public and opposing such a measure.

In closing, he acknowledged the gravity of the proposal but pointed to the need for better financial management. He also called for the clock to tick again as implicitly and activelydenied the legitimacy of Trump’s policies. Johnson’s reaction to the proposal reflects the growing tension between political rhetoric and the reality of America’s economic situation. While the stimulus proposal is a politicallice, it risks alienating both party.js and the most fundamental needs of the American people.
