New Jersey Declares Limited State of Emergency Amidst Ongoing Drone Incident Investigation

The mystery surrounding a series of drone sightings over New Jersey continues to deepen, prompting calls for increased transparency and action from state and federal officials. Reports of large drones flying near sensitive locations, including President-elect Trump’s Bedminster golf course and military research sites, have been escalating in recent weeks, sparking concern among residents and prompting a New Jersey state senator to call for a limited state of emergency banning all drone flights until a satisfactory explanation is provided. The sheer number of reported sightings, coupled with the apparent sophistication of the drones and the proximity to critical infrastructure, has fueled speculation and anxiety.

The situation escalated on Monday when Governor Phil Murphy announced dozens of drone sightings on Sunday alone, primarily concentrated in Hunterdon County. While the governor acknowledged that these figures may include duplicate reports and potential misidentifications, the volume of sightings underscores the growing unease surrounding the unidentified aircraft. The White House has confirmed President Biden’s awareness of the situation and stated that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the FBI are actively investigating the incidents. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre explicitly ruled out foreign involvement, assuring the public that the drones are not controlled by foreign entities. However, the lack of further details regarding the drones’ origin and purpose has done little to quell public concern.

State and federal lawmakers have responded to the growing public anxiety with varying degrees of urgency. New Jersey Senator Jon Bramnick, a Republican, has taken the strongest stance, demanding a temporary ban on all drone flights within the state until a comprehensive explanation is provided. Senator Cory Booker, a Democrat, while acknowledging the absence of a direct threat to public safety, has emphasized the need for transparency and ongoing monitoring of the situation. He has also formally requested a briefing from DHS, the FBI, and the Department of Transportation, urging them to share relevant information with the public to counter the spread of rumors and misinformation.

Representative Jeff Van Drew, a Republican, has echoed the calls for transparency, criticizing the lack of communication with the public and emphasizing the residents’ right to know about potential threats to their safety and privacy. The escalating concern is further compounded by statements from within the FBI itself. Robert Wheeler, assistant director of the FBI’s Critical Incident Response Group, admitted to Congress the agency’s limited understanding of the drones’ origin and purpose. While asserting that there is no known immediate threat to the public, Wheeler acknowledged the concerning lack of information, which fuels public speculation and unease.

Adding to the complexity of the situation is the FAA’s confirmation of temporary flight restrictions imposed at the request of federal security partners. These restrictions encompassed airspace above Trump National Golf Club Bedminster and Picatinny Arsenal, a key U.S. Army research and development facility. The restrictions, while temporary, highlight the seriousness with which federal authorities are treating the drone activity. The ongoing investigation, coupled with the flight restrictions and the lack of concrete information, continues to fuel public speculation and raises questions about the potential capabilities and intentions of those operating the drones.

The unanswered questions surrounding the New Jersey drone sightings underscore the challenges posed by unmanned aerial vehicles in an increasingly complex security environment. The incidents highlight the need for improved tracking and identification capabilities, as well as clear protocols for responding to unidentified drone activity. The calls for greater transparency from both state and federal officials reflect the public’s demand for clear and timely information in situations that potentially impact their safety and security. The ongoing investigation by the DHS and FBI, alongside the public appeals for information, represent a critical step in unraveling the mystery and addressing the concerns raised by this unusual and persistent drone activity.
