New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed his openness to meeting with incoming Trump border czar Tom Homan to address the issue of illegal immigrant criminals. He emphasized the city’s commitment to helping immigrants with services such as Temporary Protected Status and work authorization. However, Adams acknowledged the need to address the broken immigration system in response to the concerns of American citizens. He expressed his willingness to work with the new administration to find common ground and improve public safety.

Adams highlighted the importance of distinguishing between law-abiding undocumented immigrants and criminal illegal immigrants. He stated that those who pose a threat to public safety should be a priority for enforcement actions. Despite being in a sanctuary city, where local police are not allowed to cooperate with ICE, Adams has shown a willingness to change policies that prevent the deportation of individuals suspected of major crimes. He views the protection of innocent New Yorkers and migrants as a top priority for his administration.

The mayor responded to criticism from the left by citing past statements by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama advocating for the deportation of criminal illegal immigrants. Adams rejected cancel culture, asserting his commitment to safeguarding the people of New York City. He expressed his determination to protect residents and asylum seekers from harm, making it clear that he will prioritize public safety in his decision-making.

Adams has been vocal about the financial impact of the border crisis on New York City, with billions of dollars being spent to address the issue. He has called for increased federal support to help address the challenges posed by the influx of migrants. Adams is focused on securing the borders, addressing violent acts committed by certain individuals, and ensuring the safety of citizens in the city.

While emphasizing the importance of working together with the federal government to address public safety threats, Adams has shown a willingness to collaborate with officials from different political backgrounds. He has extended an offer to meet with Homan to discuss their ideas and find common ground on addressing illegal immigration. Homan, for his part, has expressed a willingness to work with Adams and other officials to make communities safer and prevent criminal activities.

Overall, Adams’ approach to addressing the migrant crisis in New York City involves balancing the protection of immigrants with the need to prioritize public safety. By advocating for changes in policies related to cooperation with ICE and recognizing the importance of addressing criminal threats, Adams aims to create a safer environment for all residents. His willingness to engage in dialogue with officials from diverse backgrounds reflects his commitment to finding effective solutions to complex issues affecting the city.
