Sergeant Thomas Lazzaro, a 27-year-old former Central Michigan University quarterback and member of the elite 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), tragically lost his life in a hunting accident at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. The incident occurred on a Sunday as Lazzaro was driving to assist a fellow soldier experiencing car trouble. A stray bullet fired by a hunter on a designated range struck Lazzaro, leading to his untimely death. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office classified the incident as a “tragic hunting accident,” emphasizing the unforeseen and unfortunate nature of the event. Lazzaro’s passing sent shockwaves through both the military and collegiate sports communities, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, and athletic achievement.

The news of Lazzaro’s death was met with profound grief and tributes poured in from those whose lives he touched. Colonel Patrick Nelson, commander of the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), expressed deep sorrow, emphasizing Lazzaro’s unwavering dedication, courage, and commitment to protecting the nation’s freedoms. He acknowledged the profound void Lazzaro’s absence would leave within the unit, both professionally and personally. Central Michigan University, where Lazzaro excelled as a quarterback, also mourned the loss of their former player and leader. Former head coach Jim McElwain remembered Lazzaro as a pivotal figure during his time with the team, highlighting his leadership qualities and the positive impact he had on the program. The university expressed its gratitude for Lazzaro’s contributions and pledged to cherish his memory.

Lazzaro’s football career at Central Michigan University spanned four years, from 2016 to 2019, during which he made five starts. He demonstrated his prowess on the field, especially during the 2019 season, leading the Chippewas to a commendable 6-2 record in conference play and securing a bowl appearance. Throughout his collegiate career, Lazzaro accumulated impressive statistics, amassing 542 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, along with 758 passing yards and five touchdowns. His athletic abilities and leadership on the field earned him the respect and admiration of his teammates and coaches.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Lazzaro’s academic pursuits were equally noteworthy. He graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in entrepreneurship in 2019, demonstrating his commitment to education and preparing for life beyond the football field. Following his graduation, Lazzaro made the decision to join the United States Army, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. This decision reflected his deep-seated sense of duty and patriotism, a commitment he upheld throughout his service in the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group.

Lazzaro’s service in the 7th Special Forces Group, a highly specialized and demanding unit within the U.S. Army, speaks volumes about his character and dedication. The rigorous training and demanding missions undertaken by this elite group require exceptional physical and mental fortitude, traits that Lazzaro undoubtedly possessed. His role within the Special Forces community underscored his commitment to serving his country and protecting its interests, a commitment tragically cut short by the hunting accident.

The circumstances surrounding Lazzaro’s death highlight the inherent risks associated with hunting and the importance of safety protocols. While hunting is a popular activity enjoyed by many, accidents can occur, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to safety regulations. The tragic loss of Lazzaro serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of responsible firearm handling and the devastating consequences that can result from even momentary lapses in judgment or unforeseen circumstances. The investigation into the incident will likely focus on determining the specific factors that contributed to the accident and whether any safety protocols were violated. The findings of this investigation will be crucial for preventing similar tragedies in the future and ensuring the safety of all individuals involved in hunting activities.
