Report: Jaguars’ Liam Coen Informed Baker Mayfield of Continued Commitment to Buccaneers Prior to Accepting Head Coaching Position

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ recent hiring of Liam Coen as their new head coach unfolded like a dramatic, high-stakes poker game, complete with bluffs, unexpected turns, and a final hand that left the Tampa Bay Buccaneers holding a losing hand. What initially seemed like a straightforward decision for Coen to remain in Tampa Bay as their offensive coordinator quickly spiraled into a whirlwind of events that culminated in his accepting the Jaguars’ top job, leaving the Buccaneers scrambling to fill the void.

The saga began on Tuesday when Coen, seemingly content with his position in Tampa Bay, texted Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, head coach Todd Bowles, and general manager Jason Licht, assuring them of his commitment to the team. He had even reached an agreement to become the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the NFL, a testament to his value to the Buccaneers. This seemingly solidified his future with the Buccaneers, allowing them to breathe a sigh of relief and focus on the upcoming season. However, the landscape shifted dramatically in the subsequent days.

On Wednesday, Coen initially withdrew his name from consideration for the Jaguars’ head coaching vacancy, further reinforcing his commitment to Tampa Bay. However, this decision proved short-lived. The same day, the Jaguars dismissed their general manager, Trent Baalke, opening a new avenue for Coen. Jaguars owner Shad Khan, undeterred by Coen’s initial withdrawal, personally reached out to the offensive coordinator, urging him to reconsider the head coaching position. This direct appeal from the owner proved to be the turning point in the narrative.

Khan’s persuasive intervention prompted Coen to fly to Jacksonville on Thursday for an in-person interview. Meanwhile, back in Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers were completely unaware of these developments. They were expecting Coen to arrive at their facility to sign the lucrative contract they had prepared for him, securing his position as their offensive coordinator. However, they found themselves unable to reach Coen or his agent. The unsettling realization dawned upon them: Coen’s unavailability was not a coincidence, but a sign that he was seriously considering the Jaguars’ offer.

The Buccaneers’ growing suspicions were confirmed when the Jaguars officially announced Coen as their new head coach on Friday, bringing the tumultuous week to a dramatic close. The Buccaneers were left stunned, having been outmaneuvered in their attempt to retain their coveted offensive coordinator. The entire episode highlighted the unpredictable nature of the NFL coaching carousel, where seemingly firm commitments can evaporate in the face of enticing opportunities.

This unexpected turn of events leaves the Buccaneers searching for a new offensive coordinator, a crucial role given their ambitions for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, Coen embarks on a new chapter in Jacksonville, tasked with revitalizing the Jaguars’ offense and guiding the development of their young quarterback, Trevor Lawrence. The Jaguars are hoping Coen can replicate the success he had with Baker Mayfield in Tampa Bay, where the quarterback experienced a career resurgence under Coen’s tutelage, throwing a career-high 41 touchdowns and leading the Buccaneers to an NFC South title. Coen’s arrival in Jacksonville brings a renewed sense of optimism for the franchise, and the upcoming season promises to be a crucial test of his coaching abilities. He will have the fifth overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft as a valuable asset in his efforts to rebuild the Jaguars and turn them into a competitive force in the league.
