Woman Indicted in Fatal Car Crash Involving Vikings Player and Two Others

The tragic death of Minnesota Vikings rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson in a July car accident has resulted in a 13-count indictment against the driver deemed responsible, Cori Clingman. The charges include vehicular manslaughter related to driving under the influence, carrying a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison. The accident, which occurred in Prince George’s County, Maryland, a suburb of Washington D.C., also claimed the lives of two other young men, Isaiah Hazel, the driver of the car Jackson was in, and Anthony Lytton Jr., another passenger. The three victims, all 23 years old, shared a history on the football field, having played together and won a state championship during their high school years. The incident cast a pall over the Vikings organization, with head coach Kevin O’Connell expressing his devastation and highlighting Jackson’s infectious energy, promising future, and desire for personal growth.

The details surrounding the accident paint a picture of a preventable tragedy. Police reports indicate that Clingman was driving at a high rate of speed and attempting to change lanes when her vehicle collided with the car carrying Jackson, Hazel, and Lytton. Clingman had two other passengers in her car, neither of whom sustained injuries. The driver of a third vehicle involved also escaped unharmed. The impact of the collision proved fatal for Jackson and Hazel, who were pronounced dead at the scene. Lytton was transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries later. The loss of these three young lives underscores the devastating consequences of reckless driving, especially when coupled with impaired judgment.

Khyree Jackson’s journey to the NFL was marked by perseverance and a late-blooming passion for football. He took a hiatus from the sport after high school before reigniting his athletic pursuits at the community college level. It was during this time that he transitioned from wide receiver to cornerback, a position that would eventually lead him to the professional ranks. His talent and dedication propelled him to two seasons at the University of Alabama under the tutelage of legendary coach Nick Saban. He then concluded his collegiate career at the University of Oregon, where his performance earned him All-Pac-12 first-team honors. The Vikings recognized his potential, selecting him in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Tragically, his promising career was cut short before he could even take a single snap in a professional game.

The indictment of Cori Clingman brings a degree of legal accountability to the devastating events of that July night. The Prince George’s County State’s Attorney, Aisha Braveboy, is pursuing justice for the victims and their families. The potential 30-year sentence reflects the gravity of the charges and the devastating loss of life. The legal proceedings will undoubtedly delve into the circumstances leading to the crash, including the alleged high speed and Clingman’s alleged impairment. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of irresponsible driving and the importance of prioritizing safety on the roadways. The families of Jackson, Hazel, and Lytton are left grappling with the immense grief of losing their loved ones, while the Vikings organization mourns the loss of a promising young player.

The ripple effects of this tragedy extend beyond the immediate families and the Vikings organization. The high school community where the three victims played together and achieved athletic success is undoubtedly reeling from the loss. Their shared history on the football field and the championship they won together forged a bond that was tragically severed. The incident serves as a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. The community will likely come together to support the grieving families and to honor the memories of these young men whose lives were cut short far too soon.

The indictment of Cori Clingman marks a significant step in the legal process, but it does little to alleviate the profound sorrow felt by those who knew and loved Khyree Jackson, Isaiah Hazel, and Anthony Lytton Jr. The legal proceedings will continue, seeking justice for the victims and accountability for the actions that led to their untimely deaths. While the legal system works to address the consequences of the tragedy, the families, friends, and community are left to navigate the long and arduous journey of healing and remembrance. The memory of these three young men, bound by their shared love of football and the triumphs they achieved together, will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew them.
